guys gotta be honest, ****ed up my gearbox doing something REALLY stupid, upside is, ill have a new gearbox, i just need to know some things.
what happened was ... it was wet, going about 40km/h, shifted into 3rd, clutch in, revs up, clutch out, 3rd gear (i suspect) is blown to bits... im not nifty enough to pull out all the bit of shit, so i'd say i need a new gearbox, all the gears work fine, except for gear 3, there is nothing there... but there is lots of rattling, and doesnt sound healthy at all...
FYI, its a 5L manual vr ex cop car... the gearbox wasnt very good anyway...
what is involved, what are the costs?
i suspect all ill need is a new gearbox, i cant imagine repairs going past 1 grand.. helpful comments, or links to related issues would be helpful... thanks!
most favourite JC post - I'll be head'n to the wrecker tomorrow for a new one.
so u reckon, i should take it somewhere and they can remove gearbox, replace 3rd gear cog, and re-install?
if so where could i go... is there anywhere in particular? or would my mechanic do something like that...
If you have damaged the cluster as well, chances are it's going to cost more then $1000. Especially if your saying the box wasn't very good as well, which usually means new syncros and bearings. But price will depend on whether your re-builder uses genuine Tremec parts and high quality bearings like Timken, or uses cheap crap.
Anyone with gearbox experience will be able to rebuild it, T5's are a very basic box. Although if you want it rebuilt strong, find a specialist with them as there are little tricks to strengthen them up without going all out.
