Does the engine wind over, or is it just dead when the key is turned to the start position? If theres nothing at all when turning it to start position,it is most likely the key is not getting the immobiliser code through to the BCM(Body Control Module). They probably broke or stuffed up something around the ignition switch. The key uses the two metal strips around the ignition switch as contacts (key reader) so the key can send the security signal to the BCM.This is why its very hard to hotwire these cars, and probably why they couldnt get it going, the BCM needs the security code from the key fob to disarm the immobiliser..If the blinking red security light on the centre dash does not go off when the key is turned to on,then that is your problem.

If it is a problem with the key or key reader then yes ,leave it on for 45 minutes and then see if it starts.Remember that if it is whats wrong, then you will have to wait the 45 minutes every time you want to start it until you get it fixed.Really its just a temporary way to start it so you can drive it to a mechanics to get it fixed.

it will bypass the immobilizer but if you turn the engine off again you then have to wait another 45 mins before it will start again

Have you tried the 45 minute thing, which will confirm if the immobiliser or key/key reader is the problem, which is a big chance if someone has tried to hotwire it.
