hey ppl, ive just bought a VR Clubby wags and ive noticed a problem with it changing gears.
the car has a vt 5.0 in it running the vr trans but the computer has been remaped for the car. the trans has also been rebuilt wit a stage 2 kit.
the problem is when changing gears it hits the limiter and dosent change till i back off. and it hits the limiter bout 6200..
it also dosent like staying in 2nd at low revs, it keeps droping back to 1st then into 2nd.
i thought it maybe 1 of the following but need some more ideas.
1- my vs b4 this vr use to do the similar thing when the exhaust was standard and the cat was blocked. the car is running a 2 1/2 exhaust system and extractors but it recently went thro defect and has had a restriced muffler on it. mine use to get stuck on the limiter but it didnt keep changing from 1st to 2nd.
2- maybe the remap is playing havok on the gear selection and needs to get looked at.
3- might be that the throttle body pressure on the trans is to tuned to hard and needs to be backed off.
i was thinkin of geting these things looked at or even getting a manulised trans kit put through it so it changes when i want, or a manual....
any light shed on the matter would help out heaps..
thanks guys.
sounds similar to a problem ive been having with the auto in my ss, mine just holds 2nd gear all the way to rev limiter until i back off for a few seconds (5-10secs), delcowizzid suggested adding a shift kit which im thinking of doing but you already have one?? mine also jumps down a gear then straight back up at low speed.
Ive tried replacing the TPS in mine to no effect and all the other basic stuff.
Good luck and keep us posted if you find the problem.
actual pain ay, will let ya know..
Does the 5.0 engine run a Throttle Position Sensor(TPS)?On a V6 when these play up they can cause all sorts of problems with the shifts as the transmission uses signals from the TPS to shift properly.
never played wit TPS b4 where is it? how do i change? and how much ruffly?
its on the bottom of the throttle body, 2 torx head screws hold it on and 1 wiring plug, there pretty simple to get off and can be done with the TB in place, i removed my TB when i changed mine tho so i could clean it. they cost around $50 for a new one you could do what i did and get a known working one to test on your car any thing from a VN-VR V6 and V8 and VS V8 are the same part hopefully it will fix your problem but it had no effect on mine.
yae cool will give it a sus 2moz, ive still got my vs 5.0 in da driveway so ill use that 1. idz let ya know how i go..
baa no real difference, still holding gear for way too long, im gona go 2 my trans guy 2moz n ask him wat he rekons..
With my V6 it will hold the gear shifts way into the redline if its held flat through the gears. It sorta seems like its not gonna change up at all until it finally does at the "very last minute" so to speak.
my actual bounces on da limiter, or just stays on red, real bad 1st to 2nd.
No good like that.As you said,go see the trans guy and see what he says.Let us know how you get on.
will do......
mine dosent do that, it does hold it rev a lil longer than normal to change 2 2nd. just a pain when you wanna giv it sum stik..
i have noticed a bit of play in the shifter, does ne1 knw wat that could mean and would it explain the problem im having??
well took it to the trans guy 2day and all the readings r fine, no dramas. he rekons now that it has to be a computer problem. gonna take it to a remapping place n get them to sus it! baaa...
updating my issues with the trans for ppl wanting to know, i went to my dyno place the ota day n i had the auto elect look at the computer and it has no problems! he put a standard 1 in and still the same! they beleive its a trans problem. they rekon it might be a stuffed or blcked valve coz of the way it holds it pressure n dosent want to change. i have now spoken to another trans guy and he rekons the same thing.
im getting the trans looked at nxt wk and i will let ya know the verdict!

Stick a bog stock ECU on and take it for a bash, It will tell you whats going on, If it doesn't do it, there is your problem, if not I would be looking elsewhere.

he done that n it still ran the same, if the trans guy cant find a fault then i will take it another computer guy.

If another ECU didn't change the problem, then a computer guy can't help. I would be looking at other things, see if you can get a hold of someone who owns a Snap On Analyzer, they might be able to pin point it.

the last trans guy ran a check and nothing came up, everthing was ok. this other trans guy is gonna take it appart n clean it change the filter n oil n have a look at the valves.

Thats another thing, Is it low on oil???

Are you running an airflow meter or map sensor?
What about dissy and manifold what sort. As you say
it has a VT roller cam 304 so these things mentioned are
also different.
I'd be replacing the TPS before you spend any more money.
THROTTLE POSITION (TP) SENSOR
REMOVE
1. Disconnect battery earth lead.
2. Remove throttle body assembly.
3. Remove two TP Sensor attaching screws using Torx bit.
4. Remove sensor from throttle body taking care not to loosen the drive adaptor, washer or spring.
5. Remove drive adaptor, washer, spring and washer.
REINSTALL
1. Reinstall washer, spring, washer and drive adaptor to throttle valve shaft.
2. With throttle valve in the normally closed idle position, install TP Sensor on to throttle valve shaft and throttle body at a position 30 degrees clockwise past throttle body attaching screw holes.
3. Rotate TP Sensor anti-clockwise on throttle body.
4. Install TP Sensor attaching screws and tighten to the correct torque specification 1-1.5Nm
5. Reinstall throttle body assembly.
