I have a 93 vr with 4hdd gearbox wich is stuffed, I just brought a whole wrecked vr being told it had the correct gearbox in it till I got it home and found that it was infact the 5hdd. After serching this website I found that I can put the 5dhh in but I will get torque converter lock up, can someone explain what this is please? Also it was said that if I change the wiring loom it will all fit perfectly, can someone explain this to me in a little detail? like how do I do it? Thank you to however can help me.
For your information I have a complete wrecked car so parts are not an issue.
If both vehicles are original VR's with original transmissions there shouldnt be a problem. I know VR has a different amount of pins on the transmission electrical connector compared to a VS which had an extra pin and doesnt fit into the VR connector and vice versa.(otherwise the transmission bolts up no worries)
even though 1 is 4hdd and the other is 5hdd? the wrecked car I am taking the gearbox out of is a series 2 vr mine is only a series 1
check the number of pins in the wiring connector on the gearbox, you need a 12 pin connector for your VR if there both 12 pin it will be fine. late 95 was when they changed to 13 pin, early 95 was still 12 pin.
As long as they are both VR,they should fit each other.Just get under there and check out the transmission electrical connectors and look how many pins is in both transmission connectors. If they are the same you have no worries.Im sure the VR had 12 pins in the trans connector, whereas the VS had 13 pins in the trans connector. If they both have 12,you are good to go.
is there an echo in here...??
Ok thanks guys ill get under there tomorow and have a look, just not sure coz a trans mechanic told be it doesnt matter about the car its the model of the gearbox that matters
just found out from a transmition specialist that it wont work without the 13th pin because it will cause heating problems so can anyone tell me how hard it is to swap the wiring loom?
if your car is a Vr you dont need a 13th pin.. thats VS (late 95 on) you need a 12 pin. Easiest thing to do is take the transmission out of the wrecked car then count the number of pins on the electrical connector on the actual gearbox, then do the same on your car if they are both 12 pin your new box will fit.
ok will be having a look soon as i can get the car up on ramps. i know it sounds daft but i just keep getting confused when I have 1 person saying a 5hdd gearbox has 13 pins and thats what matters not the car but everyone on here says it will be fine. I can guarantee both cars are VR's 1 has 4hdd gearbox the other has 5hdd gearbox. You know what Im just gonna take the gearbox, stick it in and see what happens. Everyone here says it will work so ill just do it, the transmition mechanic just wants me to spen money in his shop
it will only work if it has the same amount of pins as the one you take out.. if there both VR you should be alright.
Someone on here should be able to tell you if the 4HDD and 5HDD have the same electrical connector or not.As bandit said above the VS was the first to use the 6HDD with the 13 pins,so Id say the 5HDD and 4HDD would both be from VR and both would have 12 pin connectors because the VP wasnt electronically controlled by the ECU threrefore doesnt have an electrical connector at all.
ill just have to take it out and have a look
