I hate my life.
I am trying to do a cooling system flush. Got some radiator flush & cleaner and poured it down the top radiator hose.
Tried to start my car, it started, but I didn't put a gasket on the thermostat housing and it was spewing coolant/coolant cleaner. Stopped the car
Fixed up the gasket
Tried to restart the car - NOTHING.
The belts turn but then a loud ticking comes from the back of the engine.
Any idea what this could be and why this piece of trash wont start now?
its not the starter ticking is it? like flat battery ticking?
Battery is brand new.
It's like a rapid ticking/clicking noise.
I should note that I didn't have the thermostat inside the housing when I started the car the first time.
Could this cause it to flood?
No, many people remove the thermostat and chuck it in the bin even though I wouldn't recommend that. My VS has done that was the solenoid bolt on the Starter Connection was loose and it imitated a flat battery.
na shouldnt flood it, shouldnt affect anything but the cooling system. unless ya wet some sensor or something.
dose it half turn over then, tick tick tick tick a couple of times a second? just cause new batterys can go flat too. my only idea was that its ya starter ticking from battery being flat.
I just don't get why it would start 2 minutes ago and not now
Don't think its the starter either, because its a really rapid kind of tick.
really pissing me off.
Just wasted $12 on the coolant flush bulls*** too.
how did it used to start before?, did it wind over fast or slow?
If it isn't the power cable to the starter a sensor may have been fried, try reading the fault codes to see if anything is logged.
When I turned the ignition the belts would move slow for a second then the engine would turn over..
I'm just thinking is there anything around the thermostat housing that, if gotten wet, would make the car not start (minus spark plugs - checked them)?
Have you tried removing the battery leads from the battery, cleaning them and then tightening them?
The fast clicking is low battery current from a flat battery or bad lead connection!
Hmm maybe some coolant got onto the battery leads..
I'll give them a clean and report back
its either a flat battery or a stuffed starter motor or loose connectons. you say its a new battery, has it been checked it could be fused out and should be under warranty, most battery's have at least a 1 yr warranty, if the battery is good than the starter motor is stuffed. thats all a loud clicking noise can be when trying to start.
Cleaned battery connectors and still.
Battery is fine, was driving the car and all a day ago. It's like a really really really fast ticking noise, not like a start motor ticking...
Also now the belts aren't even moving.. Nothing is happening besides this zappy ticking noise when I turn ignition
So really coolant spewing everywhere at a moderate pressuer coming from the thermostat housing would have NO IMPACT on anything? Nothing in the engine bay could get splashed with liquid and stop working?
Alright so I tried to jump start the car and still nothing. It stopped making the fast ticking noise and the belts were just trying to move very very slowly. Is this the starter motor??
Is there ANYTHING else that could possibly be wrong before I go out and buy a new starter motor for nothing?
My money is on the starter motor being raped. Only thing it could be. The coolant leaking from the thermostat should have no bearing on the engine turning over whatsoever. Starters are a common replacement especially on high kilometer cars.
Can somebody please show me where the starter motor is on this grid picture I laboured over,
about f16 i think get it recondtioned at an auto elecky insted of a new one
yea you will have to pull the belt off to get to it.
i think it cost me about $100 i think it cost me. let us know how you go
You will have to get under the car to undo the starter bolts.I dont think you will be able to get at them from under the bonnet. Also have you checked the "START" relay under the bonnet near the fuses. These relays can sometimes fail and cause starting problems.Just swap it over for the horn relay or one there similar to it and then see what happens when you try to start it..
