    Default Second hand LSD problems.

    Hey guys

Brought an lsd of some shady lookin C*** off Egay.
Put the lsd in and thought it was good, Now after driving it for about 5 mins it starts to get a mad whine/scrape sound up.
Also when reversing the first time i got a mad clunking sounds 2 times sounded like the gears locked up or something.
Anyone know what the problem could be? needs a decent service?
    Thanks.

id never buy a second hand lsd or diff dude, its only like $1100 to get your diff gears changed and lsd recoed or shimmed.

MMmm I think what you are hearing is whats called diff chatter.
This is caused by the Limmy slip cones binding to the differential end gears.
This is a common problem with Holden LSD Diff's after a oil change and is not a big problem to fix.
GMH have a product called Diff Chatter Pack which is just re-labeled
    Penrite LIMSLIP ADDITIVE 7098
Used to alleviate problems associated with chatter in all limited slip and spin resistant differentials.

So you can save your self a lot of cash by getting the stuff from Penrite direct and giving the expensive GMH re-branded stuff a wide birth.

    Eh,
I'm a complete nob, The LSD has no F***** oil in it. Well, I think.
If i stick half a coat hanger in through the fill hole on the side, It should be neally to the top of the hole right?

they need to be filled to the bottom of the filler plug, when u check it make sure the car hasnt been driven all day otherwise you wont get an accurate reading..

I drove it about 200 meters to hear the sound again and nothing, But still, I got the coat hanger to the bottom of the diff pan and no oil at all.

Dont drive it until you get some proper LSD oil in it.The damage might already be done though.

I would mix the additive with the diff oil. Is the sound from the front coming from around the gearbox? If so I would check the drive shaft.

    Good luck.

Maybe do a few oil changes till its good?? Maybe it never had an oil change before. Gave my LSD a few oil changes when i first got it only cuz it looked as if it had sat out in the weather for a bit. Turns out to be a great LSD - really tight. I change the oil every 10,000km though. After a long drive my diff gets that chatter but I heard when you put that additive in it loosens them up a bit?? Is that chatter bad for the diff?

You'll need around 1.65l of oil. Castrol SAF/XA (synthetic) is the recommended oil and doesn't need any additive. Alternatively you could use cheaper oil like Castrol LSX90 together with an additive.
