Default Speed alert set to permanent digital speedo.

Has anyone worked out why some speed alerts will set to a permanent digital speedo and some wont.My 95 VS wont stay on the digital speedo permanently. It only comes on with the flashing orange light and switches back to speed alert mode once the key is turned off.A mates 96 VS wagon will set permanently, and another mates VR will set permanently and I know of another VR that wont set permanently.Ive read through plenty of threads about it on here and no one seems to know why some will set and others wont. They are all the same looking speed alert units in the dash, theres nothing different about them.So as I said, does anyone know why.

hold down all 3 buttons and start the car
wait till it beeps or flashes and then press set
and then it should stay permanent unless u disconnect ur battery or repeat above process
(did it to mine other day)

edit : my bad, just noticed u weren't asking how to do it lol

Yeah some will set and others wont and I want to find out why.I know how to set it.I was doing it today.I showed my mate in his VS,his stays on permanently with no flashing light.Mine wont stay on at all unless the light is blinking and as I said it returns to the speed alert as soon as the key is turned off.It wont stay there permanently.Ive seen the same thing happen with VR models too. Some will set permanently, others wont. There has to be a reason why.

I've not found anything in the dash looms to say they are wired differently.

Someone should be able to tell us what the go is with em.As far as I know they are all the same speed alert units.Theres nothing different that I can see. When I hold all 3 buttons in on mine and turn on the key it does nothing at all,it stays blank until I let the buttons go.My mates just comes up with 100 km/h and then when you press set it displays 0 km/h and then its set permanent with no flashing light.I thought the wiring would be the same but wasnt sure until 88greenvn confirmed there is no difference in the wiring.Maybe its the actual speed alert unit. Some might be different. It doesnt seem to go by the models either, they are the same in VR or VS, some set permanent, some dont.Theres gotta be a reason why though.

I will definitely be trying that next time I see him, thats if he dont mind me pulling his dash apart.I will post what I find when I get a chance to do it.I was thinking about getting a couple of different units from a wreckers and trying them to see if theres any difference.Hopefully someone here will read this and be able to shed some light on the matter.

I had my speed alert set on temporary electronic speedo today (with the stupid light flashing away) and it reads about 3 to 5 km/h different to the actual speedo .Then I looked at the tech 1 speed readout and it showed a different speed again, about 2-4 km/h difference again from the other two.3 different speeds showing up,I wonder which one is closest to being right.

I have 2 SB's you could use to test with if your OK with posting them back to me. You would be welcome to pull them apart and see whats what if 1 works and the other fails.

Tried this with my 04/97 Acclaim.
Using all three buttons will set it permanently with no flashing light.
Using two buttons will set it temporarily with flashing light.

Apologies if this is already known.

Yeah, the ones that can be set permanent can be set to either mode,(permanent or temporary). The ones that wont set permanent will only set temporarily with the light flashing..

I'm thinking early units will have a different switch block then the VS - So maybe later models have a different PCB inside with different configeration that allows the the digital speedo to stay on.

I know for sure that it will set to permanent on some VR's and not on others, and also on some VS's and not others. It doesnt seem to matter if the car is an early VR or a late VS,some set and others wont.Im determined to find out why.

I have finally found a speed alert that will set to permanent speedo. There has to be a reason why some will set and others wont.I have looked at the inside of the two units, one unit that will set permanently, and one unit that wont, the inside looks exactly the same, the circuit board, everything.I was thinking that if a few people can post their speed alert details which is on a sticker on the back of the speed alert unit, that there might be some units with a different part number,or maybe even from a certain build date.
The unit that wouldnt set permanently which was originally in my 1995 VS has a build date of 17-10-95 and a GMH part number 92048774.
The other unit that will set to permanent speedo has a build date of 24-6-97 and has the part number 92053373.
I thought it might be just the later ones that set, but the VR ones are the same also, some set, others dont.So I cant see how when it was built would really have anything to do with it.

If anyone is intertested in all this and wants to help work out why some set and others dont, you can help by posting your speed alert units details and whether it sets to permanent speedo or not.The speed alert unit just slides out of the front of the dash,I used a small screwdriver to get in behind one side of the unit and gently levered it outwards to unclip it.It will just pull straight out once one side is unclipped. The build date and part number is on a couple of stickers at the back of the unit.Cheers.

They are the same as the ones I have,it would be interesting to see what they do compared to mine.Maybe a mate can let you check them out on his car to see if they set permanent or not..If you can remove the cover of the unit, you can check to see if the two circuit boards are the same as well. There has to be a reason why some are different,Im determinded to find it.
