Default doing your own tune up

Hi guys, question on doing your own tune ups - VR V6.
Besides the usual oil, filters, plugs what else should be done if anything when doing your own 5000 or 10,000 km tune ups?

    Empty the ashtrays

I usually reset the ECU after changing air filter or plugs.

Compression test, if you could be bothered.
Ohm test spark leads and run test spark.
    Cylinder balance test.

Like most Weekend Warriors I know, they open the bonnet with the engine running and rev it up and down for 15 mins. That includes a sustained rev right out for 20 seconds and a lot of sequential bursts from idle. Close the bonnet, turn it off and start the really loud vacuum cleaner to do the interior.

Seriously, you could flush the coolant, auto fluid, p/s fluid and brake fluid every year as well and inspect the brake pads, engine mounts, unis, steering boots and suspension bushes!

    ^^^ Bwahahahahaha.

    Fuel filter? Light check?

    I do oil+filter every 5000k. Plugs, air+fuel, auto, coolant every 25000k.

    And empty the ashtray.

Its worth cleaning the throttle body and the (IAC)-Idle Air Control valve ports and the (TPS)-Throttle Position Sensor ports in the throttle body every 3rd service or so.Use carby and throttle body cleaner available in a spray can.Doing all this improves idle and starting.

I spray it on and clean it out while the engine is off.I remove the tube that connects the air box to the throttle body and spray it all around and try to wipe off as much gunk as I can with a cloth.I spray it up into the plenum and around the butterfly flap and in the IAC ports. It always runs a bit rough for a couple of seconds when starting it after doing this but it always comes good and it runs heaps better, starts better etc.Ive never tried to start the engine while the tube is off so that it can be sprayed in to the throttle body with the engine running. It would probably stall the engine anyway.Im pretty sure Ive never actually tried using it like that.If you really want to give it a good cleanout, remove the plenum cover as well and clean it out too.The instructions on the can of cleaner I have doesnt mention whether the engine should be running or off when using it .Just says to spray it in the carby or throttle body.

Just service it to the log book including lubricating al the door hinges etc and make sure the coolant and brake fluids are changed when required (every 27 months I think). Service the Auto when specified.
Get under the car when you service it and look for anything worn or loose.
When cleaning the throttle body with carby cleaner it's a good idea to try and keep it off the electrical parts, if it is really dirty take it off and remove the IAC and TPS and then clean it. An auto elec told me not to get the electrical parts soaked in carby cleaner and years ago I did just that to the IAC in my VN and it ended up having to be replaced.
In my VY the throttle body gets a bit of carbon build up and the throttle was actually a bit sticky when I bought the car so I just cleaned it with a soft rag and some petrol.
Spark plug leads should be resistance checked when you do the plugs, too high and you can do damage to other parts of the HT system.
Also you can remove the plenum from the manifold if it is really dirty and check the PCV valve.
Check all vacuum hoses, radiator and heater hoses and auto cooliong line hoses for leaks or damage. Replace radiator hoses if they are bulged around the clamps.
And check the wheel bearings and I also like to re grease the sliding pins on the brake calipers once in a while using the correct silver grease.

You should try to completely fix the misfire, not just reduce it.Id try replacing the plugs and leads. If it still misfires then, renew the 3 coils, use genuine holden coils or a good brand like MSD.Another thing to look out for is that you can test these coils on a multimeter, and they can show that they are still ok and within specs, but then can still cause misfiring.Ive seen it happen a couple of times now with these coils.
