hey all was just wondering would a vs trans fit a vr? and would it work all sweet?
does like series 1 or series 2 matter need to know asap
The transmission will bolt up as far as I know but the wiring connector wont plug in.One connector has 12 pins(VR),and the other(VS)has 13 pins.I dont know if theres a workaround for this problem or not.
think series 2 had the 13 pin if its from a series one its the same as vr i beleive
u can do it u change the rear housing and th loom in the pan and all good the 1 wire difference is for the speedo.
I'd go by what a trans mechanic says and not someone on a forum..
there is a sticker on the trans on the bell housing, get a replacement to suit your no it should be a 4hdd or a 5hdd.
will work fine as said above the only difference is the the harness plug, being vs having the 13 and vr having 12 the extra pin is for 3-2 down shift solenoid which vr box didnt have,
and as your harness for vr dosent have the extra wire in it it dosent even know its there so wont hurt abit,
and with the speedo plug, you can always swap the entire extension housing off the original vr box and put it onto the vs one
cheers
EDIT: by the way i am a trans mechrebuild autos all day every day
Why would you want to? The electronic gearboxes suck! If you want tough box get a properly built 4l60 (non electronic) like VN VP had. Cast iron Valve body, VS box has aluminium valve body (wears quicker) and no matter what anyone says a proper shift kit can't work properly with the electronics there, they just don't, you can up line pressure but the box is still not as responsive as a shift kitted 4l60. I am currently having a VN box built for my car with a TCI TH400R4 fully manualised valve body purely because I was fed up with the bullcrap shifts and it not doing exactly what I want.....
My 2c, but I'm fussy....
Anyways, This guy can be very helpful with sorting out the ECU and Speed sensor problems. He also does mad tunes. eBay My World - trx100
Cheers, Good luck

There is no such thing as stupid questions, Only stupid people.
all depends on how u build the box trikkben and wat you use, also i dont think he is wishing to stick hundreds of horse power thru it
if your really after a kick ass shifting box, buy all the Superior - super shift billet servos, for 2nd apply and 3-4
2.5/8" wide band, sonnax boost valve for pump,
drill out your oil feed holes in the valve body seperator plate for 3 & 4 piston
and an interceptor module for in car adjustment of line pressure and torque converter clutch
and an adjustable lock-up delay module
and if u want a full manual setup add in a stage 3 shift kit
and that will get you shifting harder and better then any govener controled box ever could
from all the experience ive had ive only seen one alloy valve body in a commodore wear the bore for the valve itself and it was cause they guy had water in his box for a good 30k kms i really dont know how it survived that long
but in saying that 4l60's do have a problem with pushing the check balls thru the seperator plate but thats an easy fix you can buy a kit for $26 to fix a ball saver in each ball location and u wont have to worry again ever
thansk everyone above for the comments,
i think i will stick with a 4hdd if i can find one making it alot easy, and no mucking around.
sorry i wasnt suggesting you put all that into a box i was just replying to trikkben about saying electronic boxes are junk,
but yes u can easily put your vs box into the vr the only thing that needs changing is the extension housing as early vrs had the old speedo,
and everything will bolt up and plug in as normal
Why have heaps of people posted on here saying they cant connect the transmission connectors on a VS trans to VR or visa versa as the transmission connectors have different pins in the plug. If it were that easy no one would have problems with it.Ive never had to actually had to do it but from all the posts Ive read about it, it seems like its more complicated than just swapping the extension housing over.

ok a vs box can go into a vr with a simple swap of the extension housing if the speedo is different, and as the wiring harness in the car itself dosent have the extra wire for the 3-2 downshift solenoid in the vs box it dosent have a problem, and the 3-2 downshift solenoid is only there for a smoother apply it isnt nessesary for the working of the box and wont cause a problem
but u cant put a vr box into a vs as it dosent have the extra solenoid and the computer will search for it, finding a problem thinking the solenoid is dead and chucks the car into fail safe,
so u can put a newer box in your old one butnot a old box in a new one
the connector plus is the same just with an extra pin,
u can even put a vt box in a vs if grind a small section out of the bellhousing to make the exhaust fit
but a vt box wont go into a vr because of the bellhousing and no bottom supports
hang on a minute i have fitted approx 7 vs autos into vr commodores and i will tell you to ignor anyone who tells you it cant be done the only thing i ever changed on any of these cars was the extention housing which is four bolts piss easy and they operate as they should the vr main plug pushes straight back on to the vs box with no modification at all. also for what its worth i have fitted vx autos straight into vs commodores with the only change needed is the cross member and the cat mount position. like they say dont bag it if you havent tried it!
not sure how u got the vx box in there without grinding the bellhousing to accomodate the way the vs drivers side exhaust hugs the box,
meh who cares either way it works
