Cruise control only working half the time?

my cruise sometimes wont always turn on, then at times it will but the dash light will fade out, sometimes cruise light comes on but no cruise engaged light, this problem is doing my head in, anyone had similar problem? howd you fix it?

Common for the c/control wires inside the indicator stalk to break.

I can hear the relay under the dash clicking which indicates to me that there is power triggered by the switch, I will change this first then and see what happens

If not the above, check the adjustment on the CC backup brake switch - they can loosen and make the CC think the brakes are applied.
