    Default Oil for VS 5lt

g'day, just wondering what you guys use in the way of engine oil for a VS 5lt? I am used to diesel 4wds etc so im all new to the performance side of things

what oil would ya recommend for a VS 5lt with about 180ish on the clock? i am going to be doing the usual cold air induction, memcal maybe later on i will think about more performance stuff.

Brands, Viscosity, fully syntheic or semi synthetic?

i am useing penrite HPR 15 at the moment in mine . its viscosity is 15 - 60 , i think its a semi synthetic but mostly mineral oil. been in my engine for about 3 months and 2000 kms , hasnt used any oil yet. my 5 ltr has done 245000 kms. b4 that i used penrite HPR 30 which is 20 - 60 viscosity.

in most of my cars over the years i have used penrite and never had any issues, had a VT V6 a while back and i ran that on Castrol Magnatec that seemed quite good

has anyone used fully synthetic? what are the advantages?

I would hardly call a 5L a performance engine. People are too hung up on which oil to use thinking they will gain extra power or it will be better for their engine. It proves one thing, advertising works.

I'm pretty sure 20W50 is the manufacturers recommendation, just use a brand name oil and you will be fine.

i would call a 5lt more performance than a nissan TB42 carby running gas, i am not hung up on oil to improve performance i am hung up on oil to make the engine run smooth, ultimate lifespan etc etc i would honestly say that using penrite or castrol would be better than using a no name brand?

i would still like to know what the advantages of a full synthetic oil would be compared to many smei-synthetics out there?

Agreed. It's a low stress engine. Any decent oil will be fine. As always, longevity comes from frequent oil and filter changes, not super expensive oil. I use Penrite in mine normally, but have used Shell, Valvoline etc when on special.
I like VS Caprices so much, I bought 2... and a WH Grange!

I would hardly call a mine spec Hilux performance either hey Trity7 lol...some ppl are quick on the trigger I cant see where the OP said he was looking for performance from the oil just something better to use BEFORE he goes looking for performance...I use Penrite have for years since a rep did the usual speil about viscosities and showed me the difference in quality of base oil they use between them and well known brands before the additives are thrown in the mix...the difference was amazing (and did the check later myself)...at the mo Im using HPR-30 but next change I have the full synthetic sitting in the shed ready to try with the Terracharger but thats only a personal choice...mine has 170-180ish on the clock...

I just think you mis-interpreted what i was getting at... i never said a VS 5lt is a "Performance" engine, when i was talking about performance stuff i was more getting at engine mods down the line i never related oil alone to performance figures? I have always used semi-synthetic oil on my street cars, never used fully synthetic so i was after some 1st hand experience from members. Semi-synthetic oils from a well known decent company such as Castrol, Penrite, Penzoil etc all seem to be much of a muchness and i personally wouldn't rely on oil alone to improve "performance" figures considerably. I too am aware of regular oil and filter changes to be done on the vehicle would have a better result on the engine.
Just a quick suggestion... read the post before answering, might help for future replies mate

And you misinterpreted what I said sunshine. I said "people" get hung up on oils, not specifically you. And the first sentence implies a 5L is a performance engine.

What I was getting at was people would undoubtly steer you in the direction of an expensive fully synthetic racing oil that is IMO, total overkill for a relatively stock 5L that is around 15 years old. Any brand name oil, be it mineral or semi synth, that is at the very least what the manufacturer specifies would be more than suitable.

sunshine? geez sorry mate didn't know you were that way inclined??

don't wanna start a slinging match but my first sentence didn't have anything to do with saying a 5lt is a performance engine - "g'day, just wondering what you guys use in the way of engine oil for a VS 5lt?" i honestly don't know where ya got that from mate?

i suggest you do as per what your signature states "It is better to be silent and thought a fool than to open your mouth and prove it."

    end of discussion!

not trying to stir things up or anything, but to be fair the 5.0 V8 engine was the performance engine for the VS range it was the most powerful factory unit fitted in the VS (355 not included)
So if you want a "performance" VS you buy a 5ltr so to speak

I have run Mobil 1 full synthetic in my wifes 5.0lt VR since we bought it in 1997 at roughly 127700km's.
It currently has 285000km's on the clock, Does not blow smoke it is getting tired however i've never had any issues with the engine and the oil has always been good, I've even streched the friendship with oil changes once or twice to about 15000 to 20000.
when the oil was changed it seemed still servicable (no particles, not diluted with fuel, & still viscous).
On all my other cars I use Penrite as I've never had a problem using quality oil.
