hi all did the code test on my car its a vr 5.0 and got Code 46 - No Reference Signal While Cranking
does any one no what this means thanks.
This is what the gregorys workshop manual says. This is for a V6 VS though.-When code 46 is active it will prevent the engine from starting. If the engine starts, the code is not active.Check for loose or dirty connections at the crank angle sensor, the DFI module and the ECU terminal D12.
(1) Ensure that the ignition is off and disconnect the ECU wiring connectors.
(2)Check the voltage at the ECU terminal D12 with the ignition on.
(3)If the voltage is not approximately 9.5 volts, check the wiring between the ECU terminal D12 and the DFI module for continuity and shorts to earth. If no fault is found in the wiring renew the DFI module.
(4)Repeat operation (2) while cranking the engine. If voltage is not 2-3 volts, renew the DFI module. If the voltage is 2-3- volts, check for loose connection at the ECU terminal D12.If no fault can be found and the fault remains renew the ECU.
Just check all the wiring and connections to the distributor and ignition module and ECU etc.,the V8 does not have a crank angle sensor,it has a hall effect sensor in the distributor instead.Ive noticed a few people posting with problems with their 5.0 engines ignition systems. The hall effect sensor and the ignition modules seem to be the main cause for a lot of ignition problems on the V8's.If the wiring check turns up nothing then maybe swap the ignition module with a mates one or whatever. And if that shows up nothing then try a new hall effect sensor.

been over the wiring heaps looks all good had a prob with it not starting replaced the ignition module and its been good for about 4 weeks . when it played up today did the test and got 46
Id be checking the hall effect sensor in the distributor.(It does a similar job to what the crank angle sensor does in the V6 engine).Try another one in there and see what happens.I dont know how hard it is to replace it or what they are worth new but someone here should be able to tell you.
hall effect sensor is new dizzy time $300, dont be tempted by the cheap crap on ebay or you will be replacing it again in no time. Test your coil before you replace the dizzy much cheaper option and they are known to fail.
changing the dizzy with the standard banana manifold in place is a pig of a job due to the lack of space but it is doable
had a look at the coil that was something i thought it might be and it looks new i no im going to have to do the dizzy everything leads to that just not keen but still would like to no what "Code 46 - No Reference Signal While Cranking" means
It basically means the ECU is not getting its reference signal from the engine so it knows where the exact location the crank is in its 360 degrees of rotation. The ECU uses this reference signal for the ignition timing and injector timing and pulse width ect.The hall effect sensor is used by the ECU to get this reference signal on the V8, and the crank angle sensor on the V6 engine..
what symptoms/faults are you getting whilst driving or trying to start your car?
Ive had a hall effect sensor fail on me on my last car, once the car got hot over 40-50km drive it would not start again once i turned it off until it had cooled down it gradually got worse and worse until it would make the car cut out whilst i was driving, it got to the point where the car would die after 10km then i had to sit at the side of the road for 10-15 mins until it would start again.
I went through everything on the car ignition modules coil every sensor you could think of etc then i changed the dizzy and it was good as new never had the problem again.
thanks for your reply's i will be chasing down a new dizzy threw the week what a pain in the ass of a job tho
