    Default Chop Mufler Out??????

I have just checked under my 97 vs ecotec and I have no cat converter, I have a resinator and two mufflers, I have recently put put K&N filter in along with S/C CAI I do not have enough money to do a whole new exhaust system.
will chopping a muffler out help with both airflow and a better sound??????
    cheers for any advice!!!!!!!!!!

dont know what the law is in sheepville, but for a roadworthy in aust, im pretty sure you need a muffler. but what you can do is just cut the muffler out, put a straight pipe in it, then cut the muffler in half and weld it around where it should be. My mate did it on his Land Cruiser and its sweet as!!!

why would there be 2 muffs? so someone has got rid of the cat and put a muffler in plce of it.... a bit irish i would have thought cos mufflers are more restrictive than cats....

unless they were going for that super quiet sound....

yeah a previous owner looks like they have done crazy shit!!!!
I am going to leave a muffler on, but seen as I have two I thought it would be sweet chopping one out!!!!!! I am hoping this will give it a bit more bass nothing over the top just a little more noise and less restriction!!!!!

Is it IRS? Because I know IRS models had 2 mufflers, one each side before the diff. Why don't you just remove the resonator if that is the case?

    Default Hollowing cats

in victoria if you hollow your cat out, apart from doing very little and making the exhaust tinny itll cost you $600 when the coppers pull you over and put a little polution meter up to the back of your car, i wouldnt bother with cutting one out i found with my exhaust the width of the pipes is what gives it its sound, i hollowed out my cat and it made the exhaust sound so shit and it did very little for performance, i ended up buying a second hand one and putting it on and i couldnt notice anything performance wise

go for the twins with dual tipps hehe, its worth waiting for mate it is worth every cent.

well funny story, turns out I did have a cat converter which the dumb exhaust shop have cut out.. even after I specifically asked for the middle muffler chopped out.
So now I definatly have no cat and two mufflers, I dont want to spend any money at the mo so I am still thinking of chopping the middle muffler out. this means all I will have is pipe and a muffler at the end...I have spent so much money latley on the car the mrs will not let me spend anymore!!!!!!

on going saga!!!!!!! had muffler chopped out this morning it has given a nice tone in the lower revs and more power, however removing the cat / resinator which ever one they chopped out has given it a cackle in the higher revs....any solutions to resolve this

Soooo...... what did they actually remove? If you don't have IRS then you never had 2 mufflers to begin with. Starting at the front you have the Cat Convertor (which you said was removed the first time), then you have the muffler (usually larger & oval), then the resonator (which is right at the back in front of the tailpipe and is round). Which of these did they remove?? It's really hard for anyone to offer advice if they are not given the proper information!

Quite right, at low revs she sounds very nice once I am up to 3500 tinny as, would the cat solve this, as they were not meant to take it out....I guarantee they will have flicked it off.....any idea what a secondhand cat goes for????????

They really should have removed the resonator from the back and left the muffler! If they removed the cat, then the muffler and just left the resonator they don't sound like they know what they are doing!

    Is it very noisy?

Don't worry about getting a cat but back in - I would probably get a muffler and ditch the resonator (as they should have done in the first place!)

na she honestly is not to noisy, just a nice hum only in 1-3 rpms though. 3500rpm turns to shit very tinny.....they suggested putting a coby in removes the tinnyness. which this time round I believe as a friend had a very tinny exhaust and as soon as they put a coby in it was all good!!!!!

What car does your friend have? If they put in a coby res on then you have two resonators and still no muffler!

lol - I had that type of system on my old Datto 120Y SSS

if I could do it again which I guess I can, I would probably go for 2 1/2 straight pipe with a couple of resinators, a friend with a vr has done this and his car sounds pretty phat!!!!!!!!!!! however I am no expert I am still trying to get my exhaust as nice as I would like it.......I think with 6's you can't get the sound of the 8's no matter how hard you try

updated situation, I have coby up the front and then standard resinator at the end with a vt 63 pipe, no cat or muffler anymore.
must say it sounds good!!!!!!!!! nothing over the top but when you wanna feed it some fat it has a great sound for a 6 anyway
