VS Wagon Rear Shock Absorber Removal

How on earth do you undo the upper nut on the rear shock absorbers? I have tried and the whole spindle rotates. I have tried gripping on the flat part but I just twisted it off! Will I need to cut the nut off?

If you are throwing them away and replacing them you can fully extend them from underneath the car after the bottom mount is undone then clamp some vice grips onto the shaft of the shock.

When I did mine a few weeks ago, I ended up putting a pipe wrench on the shocker and used a 'rattle gun' from the top. The first 1 I tried was so tight, I broke the bit off the top also.

Did mine two weeks ago - same thing, drivers side flat sheared off. Got out the old hacksaw and cut off two sections of the nut and shock fell out.
