Hi , my vs has a vt brake upgrade i think ? , anyhow just put new front pads in, everything ok except on 1 side one of the small bolts , not the main ones , the ones that connect the two parts wont do up tight , is it a big deal or shall i take it out and renew or put some locktite on it , prob didnt need to touch it in the first place !, ta.........
Do you mean the bolt that goes into the slide pin? If so there ire flat surfaces on the pin at the end the bolt goes in to it for a spanner. Any bolt on a brake caliper is a big deal and should not be loose.
Yep thats the one , wont do up real tight, its the one with a rubber type bush between the 2 halves , was real tight, like i said shouldve left it , all others do up tight , this one not quite , dont know if thread on bolt or cailper is buggered , what does this bolt actually do ? , ta
It holds your brake caliper in place.
Undo it, see if the thread is damaged and run a tap (of the correct size and thread) through the hole to clean it out. If this doesnt help, go to the wreckers and get another slide pin and bolt.
Dont drive the car to the wreckers with that bolt missing.
The rubber type bush your talking out I think is actually a dust boot to keep dust and dirt out of the slide?
There wil lbe flat surfaces on this end of the pin to hold it with a spanner while you do the other nut up into it. they are meant to have loctite put on them as well. If your going to pull the slides apart you shold clean out the hole in the caliper that the pin goes into and apply some of the correct grease to lubricate it. If these slides lock up then the brake pads will wear uneven. Do you have a workshop manual, if you haven't consider getting a Gregories manual.
Thanks for ,replies , i reckon they may have locktite on em , the one that wouldnt do up properly i took out and it had red stuff on the thread !......
I think you are referring to the guide pin bolt which screws in to the guide pin. The guide pin has a hex head which you need to keep steady with one spanner while you tighten the guide pin bolt with another spanner - 30 to 34 Nm is the torque you need.
Sorry for the dig.
Which loctite? I have a the blue thread sealing compound and would like to know if I need a different type.
Any thread retaining compound will do.
A lot better than what most get, thats a wire brush and screw it back in lol
I used the blue Permatex silicone type stuff on mine.
'Ah well, I suppose it had to come to this.'
