gearbox issues

not long had my ute picked it up cheap actually last week not been able use it yet needs new tires and a good service along with a few other small bits. whilst driving it home i noticed that when driving it normally with the gearbox(auto) in normal mode it was fine changed gear ok etc but after pressing that 'Magic' power button haha the engine would really struggle it would seem to miss fire when you put your foot down and im sure i remember the rev gauge bouncing all over the place? ill be able try it again at weekend after get tyres and fitted? but do you guys have any ideas? its a v8 if that makes a difference also the gearbox was replaced with a recon aug last year i have the paperwork.

also the gearbox wont select 1 or 2, you just get the usual park neutral drive reverse?

First off do a codes check which may show any transmission or ignition faults: Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)
The trans should have a 12 month warranty.

When you say it wont select 1 or 2, do you mean if you put the selector to 1 or 2 you get no motion at all?
Also when you say you got no codes, did you get 3 lots of 12's?
The rev counter misbehaving usually means ignition problems and with a V8 it's coil or ignition module failing which also could explain the misfiring when you planted the foot.
