Hi guy's, i've been told that i should drive my VS in power mode and in 3rd as Drive is actually a over drive to be used on long trips, is this person correct with a view to sympathy to the gearbox or is it just a way to wear it out faster so he can get my money on a rebuild?
Has this person done an analysis on your driving style or is it an assumption bassed on his or her personal driving style?
DRIVING STYLE and VEHICLE LOADING will need to be analysed to determine the best option for the individual.
Generally, heavy loads combined with lots of stop start would dictate Power mode selected.
I am an advocate of driving manuals and don't loose any sleep on the matter!
Ah yes, im all for manuals, unfortunately i couldnt find one in my price range atm. but in dire need's one must forgo certain preferences.
I drive carefully ( baby on board ) i was wondering if it was something commanly heard or not is all, being on disability, i cant really afford a gearbox rebuild so want the thing to last as long as possible.
i would have thought the higher rev's of 3rd would strain the box more in day to day driving guess i'll just wait it out and see all posts, then average it...lol
I hardly ever use the power button unless I need that little extra when loaded or overtaking on the freeway day to day driveing I don't see how power mode would benifit may take longer to get into final gear but will rev slightly higher getting there so no real benifet will come from it at all.
but now doing a V8 Manual Conversion so wont matter hehe
Get your money faster. Leave it in normal mode unless your towing something in heavy and leave it in drive unless going up a steep incline or something.

all power mode dose is change your gears IE rev longer>>> wear on box...
How could that be possible. If the clutch band is locked in-gear, how can there be more wear. As far as I'm concerned, it equals higher engine wear. This will generate more heat in the auto box and could lead to fluid break-down and cause more wear as a result when the fluid needs to be 100% - like when gunning it off from the mark and during up or down shifts. I do know burned oil gets contamination that does effect the valve body operation and thus effects shifts at crucial times. These retarded shifts, then take longer and cause adverse wear on the clutch bands.
I'm calling sitting at lights and crawling in traffic to be the highest wear on an auto. Just think about it (I do, so I dive a manual - never burnt a clutch in 25 years), if your sitting there in D for Drive and not moving, there must be heaps of band wear happening and oil getting hotter. I say that because something makes you car move forward in D on a flat surface when your foot is not on the gas. I say as long as you are moving, the wear is reduced, it don't matter what gear or OD is doing - (dependent on load of course)!
Someone please correct me if I'm wrong!

the torque converter is slipping not any clutches or bands when sitting at the lights so nothing wears apart from the pump.i tell everyone to drive in 3rd when under 100kmh no need to labour round in 4th.you will save fuel and its nice to the box.if you drive round in 4th and give the car small amounts of pedal to speed up its under way more load than in 3rd and adds to fuel consumption due to the tune commanding less timing and more fuel every time you foot moves and load changes.if in 3rd the load change is way less.i drive everywhere in 3rd until i hit the motorway if i slow below 100 on the motorway its kicked straight back to 3rd untill im at or over 100 again.
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
the vr - vs boxes are electronicly controled and are smart enough to know what to do. vn - vp boxes are hydrolicly controled and should be driven in the second D on the shifter
the vr - vs boxes are still being used in the ve commodore 4l60e and the 5 speed and 6 speed ve boxes are still a 5l40e and 6l?? so they are drived from the orignal vn box
if the gear shifts are still smooth just drive it in d and forgot about it
