I saw a VR 3.8 Commodore & van in Dungog with gas topping and the owner reckons it helped with towing. Seems they add LPG to the air inlet at less than 1% which I'm told improves combustion efficiency by a noticable but not spectacular amount (that's what I needed!). I think it was initially developed for diesel engines (might take a bit of work to find the name of the installer). I have no idea of this stuff myself but the VR 3.8 statesman I have was struggling a bit with a trailer and that seemed a handy conversation at the time! Hope someone has an answer to your problem. Good luck!
you probably wont be able to gain alot of power with "cheap mods", i say either buy a 5l or increase your budget.
