it would be a broken panhard rod or the bushes are completly stuffed
    not that expensive to replace

Could also be the upper and lower trailing arm bushes are flogged out too.
But is more likely to be the panhard rod as stated above, since this controls the side to side motion of the car, and takes most of the punishment of these forces.
Also, if an adjustable panhard rod has been fitted, make sure the adjustment nuts are fully tightened.

It is a long straight rod, located directly behind the diff, one end connects to the diff, the other end connects to a bracket under the boot floor.

Yes, that's the panhard rod, if you can move it by hand, like it has some play in it, then it's most likely the bushes and rubbers are stuffed.
This will allow the car to move about side to side.
It's not a hard job to fix, just need new bush/rubber kit for it.
They can be a little tough to undo if they haven't been changed in a long time, but just soak the bolt and nuts in WD40 and let it soak in for a while.
Then just pull it off, take out all the old stuff, clean it all up, put a little bearing grease on the contact surfaces, then put it all back together.
Make sure you tighten it all back up to the specified torque specs.
