first things first, try this - Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) see what you get from that.

breifly from what your saying, it sounds like your torque converter is on its way out, but that would probably set a code. when was the last time you changed trans fluid? next time you go on the highway leave the car in third instead of D, this is meant to prevent the torque converter from completeyly "locking up".

as for the cold start problem, it is most likely your temp sensor, a sensor that adjust fuel by the temperature of your coolant and its meant to help the car run better when cold.

check your codes and get back to us.

yep definately change your trans fluid, the difference between the two is, the sender sends a current to your gauge to tell you the tempature of your coolant, and the sensor tells your ecu the motor needs more fuel. how many times did you get code 12?

Let it go through for around a minute or two.It will flash up code 12 three times, then flash up any logged error codes. It will just continuously flash code 12 if there are no logged errors.

These engines dont use a choke. The ECU enrichens the fuel/air mix to suit the ambient temperature so the engine can run perfectly no matter what the ambient temperature is.Thats why these vehicles with engine management systems will run perfectly and not splutter or stall when they are cold. They are a world away from old engines that would use a choke and would need to be warmed up just to run or idle properly. It can be 30 above or 30 below and they always (well mostly always) start first go and not stall etc.

MARKHAYES from reading your idling problem i reckon the IAC steper motor on the throttlebody needs cleaning or if still no improvement , replace it . they are about $ 90 from holden. the IAC controls the idle speed and when engine is cold it should idle faster for about 1 minute, then drop down to around 800 revs. its best if you remove the throttlebody to take the IAC off , unplug the loom connector first. give the hole in the throttlebody where the IAC goes a good clean out with carby- t-body cleaner. you might need a TOR-X screwdriver set to remove the IAC screws on the thrttlebody. hope this helps you.......
