    Default it wont run

hi all, driving home yesterday the ute cut out so i pulled over and tried to start it again. the starter motor fires up and the motor idles for like a second or two then it cuts out . you can do this over and over and it wont run anylonger than a second or two. first thoughts fuel pump but that whines when you first turn ignition for about 5 seconds. so yeah pretty stuck at moment or where to start with it. ill change the fuel filter as i was suppose to do that at weekend with the usual service but didnt get round to that but i cant see that being the issue. its the 5 litre vs ute.

thanks any help would be great

Its probably the hall effect sensor in the distributor or the ignition control module.Theres been lots of people with 5.0 litre engines posting on here with problems similar to yours lately and they have found these two things to be the cause most of the time.

    Check for spark.
Check the EFI relay (Swap it)
    PCM
Get the diagnostic on to it

hi still got issues with it. took spark plug out to check for spark, seems pretty good lightish blue, not as big as i thought it would be but then again i dont really know what you would call a good spark. but seemed good to me. also i noticed that with the plug out the engine tried to run longer than the two seconds it has been running then cutting out. it managed to run 6 seconds or so. havent got a spare relay. can you test them or is it worth just buying new one whats price of them. i have done an error check none show up. i dont have a sparce pcm, again is their anyway i can test it?

i think ill have to go buy a second had dizzy and hope that will fix it i guess?

again when trying to run the car i fire it and just dies after few second when i try to give it bit throttle to try keeep it running it just dies as if its struggling for air.

could it be the crank sensor as i have spark and that will probably eliminate the ignition module. surely if its sparking too then the coil is ok? should i just replace the dizzy and coil and go from their as i need to elimate some things i need it running again. on ebay they sell dizzy and coil and leads i think for 150 dollars is that good. anyone in perth have or know where their for sale and can get tomorrow. or should i just go to a wreckers.

the 5.0 does not have a crank sensor, it has a hall effect sensor in the dizzy. 95% sure that will be your problem.

Cheap dizzy's on ebay wont last to long, get a recoed bosch one, will set you back around $300

ok i think ill get a dizzy then, is it worth just getting a second hand one from wreckers for now? thanks for your help mate. have you changed your dizzy before it doesnt look fun you will need small hands and alot patience by looks of it. will i need to get it tuned after changing dizzy as wont it affect the timing?

    this is what ebay sell

if you get a 2nd hand one you may run in to the same trouble your having now, yes ive changed a dizzy on the 5.0 and it is no easy job with the manifold on due to lack of room. Take the bonnet off will make things a little easier, they can be a pig to get out.

    Good luck

change your coil aswell, $70 for a new bosch one is what i paid.
If you have no spark it will most likely be the coil, then the ignition module.

Is the coil still on the back of the block? if you change it, relocate it to the firewall makes like a lot easier.

There is a way to check if the coil is working and Ignition module. It takes 1 minute to test. Rather then guessing and wasting money.
    You need a test light.
There are 2 connections on the coil one side will have power when the reds are on confirm this with the test light.
The other side will be a earth signal from the ignition module. To test the earth side you will need to crank the car and have your test light on the earth terminal. The test light should flicker on and off
If you have both these signals at the coil and there is no spark then the coil is at fault.
But if you have no earth when cranking the car then the problem lies further back like ignition module or hall sensor in dizzy. Also the positive side of the coil if there is no power there when reds are on it will be the
    EFI relay or fuse.
