Okay starting to get annoyed with the VR. Currently having major flaring and don't know what it could be. Reset the car (no error codes previous to this). Gearbox only not down shifting at WOT. Few days later starts flaring between changes as well.
Reset again same deal no error codes etc. Gearbox guy says possibly a rebuild needed (slack for 2.5k) Oil is looking similar to regular engine oil in colour but he says a service won't help. I'm slack for paying 82 bucks for diagnostic's only for them to tell me a service is needed. Any suggestions?
Try replacing the transmission filter (around $25 at auto parts shops etc,and it comes with a new pan gasket as well). Doing this also changes the auto trans fluid at the same time.(all the fluid wont drain like this though)a few litres are left in the box and torque converter and the trans cooling system pipes and cooler etc.If you want to get most of the old fluid out ,you can try undoing one of the trans cooler lines at the radiator, and let the car run to drain as much fluid as you can. Then once it stops coming out, drop the transmission pan to get the rest. The fluid should have a red colour to it and be fairly clean looking, not brown or burnt looking.Make sure the pan magnet gets a good clean. Also the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor )can cause trans shifting problems and if its not completely stuffed it wont log an error code.Could be worth borrowing a mates one and trying it.Cheers.
Hmm yeah seems like something more to do with the oil as when it starts shifting like crap the oil is on hot but it is ok when cool. I'm just going to get it serviced and hope for the best
I'd agree with what Brett says - do the transmission service yourself and save many dollars. There are instructions in the "how-to" section of this forum but from the sound of it, your transmission is probably on it's last legs and whatever you do to it now will only be band-aid repair. You can get good 2nd hand transmissions sometimes though the only sure fix is an overhaul which will cost almost what you can buy a decent VR for these days. You could always fit an manual for a lot less than the cost of an overhaul.

Possibly figured it out. I have a Mace tuned memcal. With it in tranny gets hot really quick and starts slipping. Put stock memcal in. Get's a little hot but no real slip. Found it's great when cold but get a little temperature and it goes haywire also. Seems to me as Mace tune auto as well it's pushing it harder and the crap oil cannot transfer the added heat properly. It's booked in tomorrow at a tranny shop so see what happens. Got the stock memcal in till it gets serviced. Lucky theres no metal in the oil though.
Ex cop so it came with one but thanks. Meh I think I got on to it before a major drama i.e rebuild. Just took it for a lap round the block. Took a good 20 mins to get hot and start slipping. I would be more worried if it happened all the time.
Yeah. Oil is way past it's prime. Brown and lumpy isn't good.
Great. 2nd gear is near gone. Broken piston and spring. Band is stuffed too. A mate has offered a gearbox for a decent price and is happy to get it inspected first.
