Hey my vr has recently started not to start kick's over but refuses to start but i can smell fuel from under the oil cap any ideas??
A leaking fuel injector will cause that.Fuel leaks into the cylinder which is why its hard to start and it ends up in the sump with the engine oil.Remove the fuel rail leaving the injectors fitted to the rail and turn the ignition key to on which pressurises the fuel system, you should be able to see which one is leaking.Replace or get them cleaned or overhauled as a full set of six...A workshop manual has this stuff in it and its worth getting one so you can do all this yourself and get out of it relatively cheap.
Ah ok cheer's mate :P
If it refuses to start it won't be one injector leaking and it would be very unusual for more than one to leak however as Brett says, this is the usual cause of fuel in the oil.
I'd do a error code check: Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised) and see if that shows anything up.

G'day hako,it doesnt need more than one injector leaking to make it hard to start, what happens is the piston inside the cylinder gets locked up and stops the engine turning because its trying to compress a cylinder full of fuel which is similar to when some head gaskets blow and you get a cylinder full of coolant. It makes the engine a bitch to get going. It has to clear the cylinder first and whatever is in the cylinder usually ends up in the sump as it gets squeezed past the ring gaps.

I'd figure any neat fuel in a cylinder would cause hydraulic lock and bend the conrod or dump it on the exhaust stroke. The OP says it 'kick's over' which would lead me to think along the lines of fuel+oxygen+ignition=explosion and as he ain't getting no explosion but has the smell of fuel plus adequate oxygen it 'might' be ignition. I must admit I've seen engine oil as thin as diesel on really worn engines. Think more info is needed from OP.

Yeah, sometimes it can bend the conrod but not always, the starter motor usually hasnt got the power to do that, but its a different story if you try to push start or roll start it though.Usually it just makes the engine hard to wind over the first few engine rotations.Ive seen on a few occasions when the cylinder has been full of coolant from blown head gaskets or cracked head/block and the engine wont wind over and gets locked up or a hydraulic lock.It takes a bit to clear the cylinder then they will usually start.
I remember going to the NT for work years ago and someone up there drove a Landcruiser throug a creek and sucked water into the engine, couldn't start the engine so decided to tow it behind another car and try to clutch start it, totally destroyed the engine.
The fuel rail and injectors are pretty easy to pull off and check. if it manages to start I'd also assume there would be a fair amount of smoke out of the exhaust as well?
