If the timing chain was removed when the timing cover was off, the valve timing could have been moved. This can cause the valves to hit the top of the pistons which can snap timing chains, bend valves or smash pistons or all of the above. Was the timing chain removed at all when you replaced the timing cover gasket? Also get yourself a workshop manual (if you cant get a factory manual, get a gregorys). These will show you how the valve timing should be set and how the chain goes on etc.Theres dots on the camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear which have to line up for it to be set right..

Did you hear any noises coming from the engine when you first tried winding it over?

Id say the valve timing was out.The crankshaft or the camshaft was turned while the chain was off or loose.Theres some stuff you have to check out as it could have bent a valve.I dont think it would have smashed a piston, thats more likely to happen if the engine is running when the timing chain snaps, but a bent valve in your case is a big chance. You will have to remove the heads to cheak the valves and piston tops. You will be able to see where they hit the piston(s).You could also try just replacing the timing chain and resetting the valve timing ,then see if it starts. Its up to you.

So Brett, is this another engine where a open valve will hit a piston, I can add to my list? Not a smart-arse question, because I really don't know. And I thought Toyota 4 Cyl Diesels were bad!

just had another look crankshaft sprocket has 2 teeth missing and a chunk taken out balance shaft timing looks ok if i set that right then turn the crank by hand and line chain up will that time it right again didnt sound like piston hit the valve as i have had this happen b4 on dif car due to dodgy mechanic that 1 cost me a 9000$ motor

You could just get another chain and replace the gear(which gear has the teeth stripped off?Upper or lower one?)and try it to see if it will run.As I said ,you might not have done much damage at all.Its mainly when the engine is running that big damage will happen.Just winding it over might not have done too much damage at all.Id be removing the heads for a quick look, then go from there.

sounds more like something has been left in there and jammed between the chain and sprocket if the timing was out it would just wind over and bend all the valved not snap the chain
Float like an elephant sting like a tree clubsport hits what doug does'nt see

the chain only opreats the ballance shaft, but im guessing you know that now. might be best to get a new 2nd hand engine or reco change over
