hi guys 1st of all id like to thk evry 1 that tried helpin it turns out for some strange reason the timing chain has snapped any one know the price of these at all and will my timing still be ok or do i have to set it again so sincerly thanks 2 v6lux ,moff man, brett jjj and wortus im sure if it wasnt chain u guys advice would of fixed it so thanks
If the timing chain was removed when the timing cover was off, the valve timing could have been moved. This can cause the valves to hit the top of the pistons which can snap timing chains, bend valves or smash pistons or all of the above. Was the timing chain removed at all when you replaced the timing cover gasket? Also get yourself a workshop manual (if you cant get a factory manual, get a gregorys). These will show you how the valve timing should be set and how the chain goes on etc.Theres dots on the camshaft gear and the crankshaft gear which have to line up for it to be set right..
nur didnt remove it but it has snapped clean through damper assembly also snapped
Did the engine wind over or start up at all?
been tryin to crank it since it wouldnt start it wound over just wouldnt start pretty much had nothin
Did you hear any noises coming from the engine when you first tried winding it over?
when i first did it it give a little pop from the throttle body like it tryed to start but then nothin did have a little trouble turnin for a sec but then no prob cause it obviously snapped on first turn
Id say the valve timing was out.The crankshaft or the camshaft was turned while the chain was off or loose.Theres some stuff you have to check out as it could have bent a valve.I dont think it would have smashed a piston, thats more likely to happen if the engine is running when the timing chain snaps, but a bent valve in your case is a big chance. You will have to remove the heads to cheak the valves and piston tops. You will be able to see where they hit the piston(s).You could also try just replacing the timing chain and resetting the valve timing ,then see if it starts. Its up to you.

So Brett, is this another engine where a open valve will hit a piston, I can add to my list? Not a smart-arse question, because I really don't know. And I thought Toyota 4 Cyl Diesels were bad!
just had another look crankshaft sprocket has 2 teeth missing and a chunk taken out balance shaft timing looks ok if i set that right then turn the crank by hand and line chain up will that time it right again didnt sound like piston hit the valve as i have had this happen b4 on dif car due to dodgy mechanic that 1 cost me a 9000$ motor
Sent you some pics of the timing marks via private message.Let me know if they work or not.
ok cheers mate got a manual for it this is so crazy to let go the way it did just lookin the 2 cogs that snapped off pretty sure have the timing mark on it just my luck any idea what chain worth worst case new chain, valves , pistons rebuild kit reface the heads reseat the valves have to be hittin the 1000$ mark mate owns a wrecker probally pick up low k for bout 200 400 have to get him on right day
You could just get another chain and replace the gear(which gear has the teeth stripped off?Upper or lower one?)and try it to see if it will run.As I said ,you might not have done much damage at all.Its mainly when the engine is running that big damage will happen.Just winding it over might not have done too much damage at all.Id be removing the heads for a quick look, then go from there.
bottom the crankshaft side yer i understand what u sayin big possibility bent valves or worse i got small mirror like dentist tried lookin c if pistons damaged 1s i c look ok but dont wont to turn it untill i sort this chain any idea what there worth
sounds more like something has been left in there and jammed between the chain and sprocket if the timing was out it would just wind over and bend all the valved not snap the chain
Float like an elephant sting like a tree clubsport hits what doug does'nt see
nothing was left in there mate
after resetting the timing and pulling the crankshaft sprocket off it turns out the crank shaft key has snapped a end off it and thats where the teeth have gone off the sprocket also with a hair line fracture through it but they key way looks like its got no damage can u buy these keys?
Got to s aelf serve wrecker, plenty of V6 engines left in cars these days. You decide to pay or pocket!
the chain only opreats the ballance shaft, but im guessing you know that now. might be best to get a new 2nd hand engine or reco change over
