I just replaced the fuel pump. Put in a new fuel filter and replaced the spark plugs.
Now the car is missing and backfiring heaps.
It seems to idle OK, but when you put your foot down it starts missing, dies a little bit.
When driving, unless you only lightly touch the accelerator, cough cough splutter splutter.
Thought it might have been a batch of dodgy plugs so swap them for the old ones.
Any ideas?
I'm thinking of pulling the fuel pump out again and anyone who has done this knows how much a pain in the neck it is to do.
If you have silicon type plug leads, the carbon core inside them can break very easily which renders the lead useless as they cant be repaired. You only have to pull on them a bit too hard when removing them from the plugs, or kink them a bit, and thats enough to break the core in them.Try another set of leads or borrow a lead and try it in place of each of your leads to see if you can find if one is broken(or breaking down under load). If it was running ok before you changed the plugs ,and you have tried the old plugs again ,and the same thing is still happening, then its a big chance that one of the leads is causing the problem.

Sounds like leads, make sure they're on nice and tight. If it was the fuel pump it probably would just be completely dead no backfiring.
Triple check that the plug leads are on the correct plugs.

I have a spare set of leads, I'll put them in tomorrow.
The leads should be on the right plugs. Thinking ahead and realizing that I would forget which lead went to which plug, I did them one at a time.
Put in new coils, still coughing and spluttering.
Yahoo! I had another set of leads, so I thought I would try this before checking the fuel pump.
