Hi All
I was wondering if anyone could help me out. I bought a 1994 Vr commy exec sedan mid march and have had it in the shop until the last week when it was finally RW after spending $1500. When we bought it the air con does not work at all. The fuse for the air con in the fuse box under the dash had melted but the prev owner has re-routed the air con wires and made it separate to the fuse box. We pulled out the fan resistor and the coils are all in VGC. We got a light tester and found there is not power coming from the air compr fuse bay in the engine bay, no power going to the fan resistor nor the separate air con fuse wires.
Just to clarify, are you talking about the air cond or the blower fan ??
The blower fuse has power to it but its the a/c compr fuse bay that has not power.
No I dont. Im not very car orientated lol
Can you tell us exactly what works and what doesn't - like when you turn the fan on does anything happen etc. Remember the aircon will not work if it is low on gas so first you need to ascertain if the system has any gas (refrigerant) left in it. Like woteva says, the aircon and the fan are 2 separate entities. Trying to diagnose a fault in a car that's been "altered" is very difficult so you need to supply as much information as possible.

When i turn the switch to 1, 2, 3 and 4 nothing at all comes out of the vents, when you turn the dial to control the flow of where it comes out of it makes a "tssssss" sound but nothing comes out at all. We used the light tester on all the fuses in the engine bay and the fuse bays for the air compr and LP CHK do not light up but all the other bays have power to them including the blower fuse. We also tested the fuses under the dash and the only one that doesnt have power is the air con and power windows. All the actual fuses work but its the fuse bays that dont work.
OK- so it looks like you have major electrical unknowns to sort out....however before going down that path maybe you need to check if the aircon has any gas left in it - if it has none, it may cost over $1000 to fix as usually the gas cannot just be replaced, the source of the leak must be found and repaired and this is where big costs can come in. If there is no gas you may prefer to drive around with the window down!
Anyways, first check to see if gas exists find the valve in the pix - it's on the pass side of the rad - unscrew the black cover and inside the tube you will find a Schrader valve (like a tyre valve) - press this and if gas rushes out this will mean you have gas in the system. If no gas escapes you have no gas.
Try the above and tell us how it goes.

Hi Thanks so much for the help there is gas in the air con. We used a light tester and worked out the prev owner had put the wrong fuse in the air compr bay as there was only power going to the middle bit and we needed a fuse that had a metal prong in the middle. HAHA We feel a bit silly now, but it saves us paying an auto elec a few hundred for them to tell us the same thing. Thanks again for everyones help![]()
