i did a transmission service on a friends caprice 4 weeks ago . after finishing ran the engine for 20 minutes , there were no leaks . after 2 and a half weeks pan started leaking , the car sat in carport the whole time without being driven after the service. i used a new neoprene pan gasket , cleaned the pan spotless did not see any dents or damage on pan where gasket sits. i torqued the pan bolts evenly up to 13 nm , fraction above factory specs. when did the service i only filled trans to the " full cold " mark on dipstick after running engine for 20 minutes and selecting each shift a few times. engine is 5 ltr , but i only put 4 and a half ltrs of fluid in at service so not overfull. i cant understand why trans is leaking when it is not being driven . can any one please give reason why trans is leaking ? and i have done many trans services on v6 and v8 injected holdens without problems b4.
Start over again. Ditch the neoprene gasket and install one from Repco or the AC Delco one from GMH. Do not overtighten the bolts on the pan as this will lead to the gasket being squashed and leading to flat spots whhere the fluid can leak out. Tighten only to 11Nm.
as above.
mine started leaking after 1000k you could the gasket was tighten to tight.

Use the cork type of pan gaskets.I always service my own trans.Ive probably done it about 10 times or more now and Ive never had a leak from the cork gaskets.Ive never even seen any different type of pan gasket.I just thought they were all cork ones.(Ive purchased a few different trans filter service kits and they have all included cork gaskets). One thing to remember with the cork gaskets, dont tighten the pan bolts up fully tight, otherwise it will crush the gasket and it will leak.Just nip them up until they are firm, and go over them all again once they have all been tightened once, just to firm them up a bit more.
i also serviced my friends caprice transmission b4 and then the pan gasket was cork , and had the same problem , leaking from pan. but i have serviced plenty of trans without a problem . but this problem one does not get driven [ since october last year ] . could the top of pan be slightly bowed , can i use some sort of sealant. does not driving the car cause the gasket to leak? appreciate any help .
