Hi guys,
Recently bought a 1994 VR Berlina but has some bad paint deterioration on the roof and boot. Basically don't have the money to professionally re-paint it so I plan to do it myself when time permits. The roof is quite bad some parts as far down to the metal of the roof. Read and herd about and going to do it with a fine roller and most likely a different undercoat colour.
Also have a problem with the horn =, when i push the button on the steering wheel its just makes a clicking sound does that mean the horn is bust or internal problems.
Any suggestions or ideas will be much appreciated!![]()
dude the clicking sound on your horn is the horn relay turning on and off. your horn must be broken, replace is just a bolt and 2 plastic connectors. right hand side of the car behind the bumper under your headlight
I'd do the respray with pressure pack cans - they're cheap and easy to use as long as you mask off the areas you don't want to paint. Re the horn, as 'somefool' says it's probably a problem at the horn itself - look for loose bad connections at the actual horn....they tend to corrode.

If I do use a pressure pack can, what type and would i still need to a different undercoat? plus btw I wouldn't need to mask off the areas if I'm doing the whole roof would I?
You would still need to mask off windows, trims and any areas you don't want overspray. To keep the front and rear window rubbers out of the way while you paint, you can pull them away a little from where they meet the roof and run a length of thick wire round under the rubber so it doesn't sit flush with the roof. You also need to sand/strip back the existing paint and then prime it properly.
Not sure if the VRs were painted in acrylic or two pack, but you can get either mixed up in a spray can.

not sure if you can get 2pac in a preasure pack
Yeah I may be wrong. Thought the paint shop at my work mixed 2 pack in spray cans but now I think about it i've never seen it! Will have to ask for sure on monday.

I got some 2pac mixed up in a pressure pack, it's actually a 2pac that doesn't need to be baked, kind of like an acrylic 2pac hybrid. But if you buy it in a can instead you still use a regular 2pac reducer not thinners.
Whatever paint you use stick to the same type and if possible the same brand so they work together. I think you can spray acrylic straight onto most cars without trouble but check a small area first.
A car can look good if you spray it with pressure pack cans if they are the right kind and the prep is up to scratch.
So sand it back, remove wax and grease, spray on a coat of primer or 2, sand back again with wet 800 grit sandpaper, remove wax and grease, paint a coat of colour, then another, and another if you want.
If it is metallic just spray a 3 or 4 coats of clear over it then leave to dry for a week. If it is non metallic you can sand the colour coat with 2000 grit wet sandpaper to smooth it out more then clean it up and spray on the clear.

I like doing things cheap.
You could do the whole roof for about $10 including masking: 3 cans of spray from S/C ($7.50) and a roll of masking tape plus a few newspapers....forgot to add a sheet of 400 wet and dry.
The colour you get may not match the original but then again if get it matched it will probably fade anyway. This will last a fair time and if you doubt this just think about how long graffiti stays on walls. If you don't like the results you just sand it away and you've only done ~$10.

There's a thread on here about a guy that painted his car with rollers and then polished the shit out of it. It looks pro at the end.
plus that guy used marine paint?
so do I spray it with the two pack in a pressure pack, in just a couple of sprays or do several light sprays over the roof over a number of weeks. plus is it simple to respray the boot and back bumper near the license plate?, I presume it will be the same just cover the stuff i dont want painted yea?

mate just go to any auto store and you can buy K&H paint its rather good in a pressure pack. i recently did my car for shit and giggles as the paint was screwed. mask up windows dor rubbers head lights tail lights engine bay and anything you want to stay the colour it is. sand back the clear coat on your car spray a few coats of under coat, and then spray your desired colour. remembering to sand in between every coat each time with a slightly finer grit and if your doing a light top colour use the lightest colour primer you can wehn doing dark match apropriatly aswell
thanks guys for all your help, will most likley do it on my school holidays![]()
Try and stay away from the export paint from supercheap. It doesnt spray very well and leaves a powdery finish
sit the can in some boiled water for a few minutes prior to spraying it will keep the pressure up. go for a 1200+ wet sand between coats, and a 2000+ wet sand on the final clear followed by a good cut, polish and wax. do a google on wetsanding clear.
couple of years ago i got a vr calais with the same roof problem, i just paint stripped it back to bare metal, undercoated it with 2pak (about 3 coats), then sprayed the 2 pack color (about 4 coats), then hit it with about 4 coats of clear, easy job and came up mint, the good thing about 2pak is its easy to paint and it sticks to anything, just make sure you use the correct breathing apparatus as its very toxic
Love the Australian Export Paint. A mate of mine brought a shit load of cans from a discount store for around $1.50 per can. Sprayed his datto 120y. Yeah, he done a real neat job of it but when he went to fill up at the servo, he found that the paint disolved back to the original undercoat/paint. He probably should have done it right in the first place.
Cheers!
well il get some photo's up of my progress on here if you are interested, speaking to a few painters, they tell me the important business is the prep work done before paint, if its top notch, and you use qaulity primer and clear coat, the $2 paint should look as good as you can spray it

exactly.
the prep is the MAIN thing on a paint job. hence its almost the main charge from a sray painter.
the paint and painting itself is relativly cheap and easy its the hour of sanding bogging sanding and sanding that make a paint job expensive.
if you dont need the car as a daily. and take your time you will be able to get a rather good finish. if you do need it as a daily i sugest you go to a wreckers and buy as many replaceable parts eg: doors boot bonnet bars and do a swap over. that way you can use the better quallity panels out of the doubles you have so you can sand prep and paint for as long as you like while you drive around in a complete car at least. (even if it is a few random colours)
i cant stress enough to take your time and dont get impatient. specially in winter and i assume your doing this in a shed without a baking oven i would alow double the drying time stated on the can as a MINIMUM.
i have just done a flat black home paint job on my wagon using spray cans so if there is any questions ya wanna ask man pm me.
there is also a good write up on painting you car with rollers.
you can use that as a guide for prepping you car aswell.
