Red face Replacing VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor)

    Hi All

I have an error code 24 on my VS auto trans Commodore, so have a new VSS to install.

But I can't find/see where it goes? I understand it's on the left hand side of the rear extension part of the trans - but I still can't see it!

    Anyone done this?

Is it a straight old out/new in procedure.

Are there any brackets etc to remove to expose the VSS - maybe why I can't see it. Just have car jacked-up on ground - no hoist available.

Any/all help appreciated - especially with pics.

    Cheers
    Alanm

i thought it was on the extension housing on the passangers side hidden in a little, there will be a loom pluged in to it and its held in with a half moon clamp (like the old 202 trans speedo) it has a nylon gear and with a electronic bit on the top that unscrews.

verry dirty auto but its there top left of pic

Many thanks everyone. Installed new one today and all is well. Changes gears when it should now!

For the record the Gregorys pic is correct. VSS is on the driver's side...maybe it's on the passenger side on a manual trans.

    Thanks again

Thanks AlanM what model is yours? Maybe different models have it on opposite sides? I went and checked mine it's also on the drivers side, it's a 6HDD.

Moff_man what model is the one in the pic with it on the left?

mines a series 1 1995 vs 6hdd so might have changed with vs, i guess the boxes are the same though and would still fit and work the same.

Where does the box model number come from? Where would I find it. The1 says he has a 6HDD.

My VS is a Series II Vacationer sedan, late 1996 model.

    Cheers

if you look at the trans from the engine bay on passenger side of the bell housing there should be a white sticker that says 5HDD 6HDD etc if its a V6 or if its a V8 will say 5HBD 6HBD etc..

edit: The1 beat me to it lol

If you look at the pics The1 posted,it says 6hdd in black, stamped on the transmission itself up the top on the bell housing, just to the right and up a bit from the oil pipe unions..Look in this area to find what yours is.The VP trans picture above shows a sticker in a similar place to show its type.
