    Default VR Engine Mount Change

    G'day all,
I did a bit of research on here last week about changing my engine mounts which were well and truly shot to pieces. It seems everyone was saying the passenger side one was a PITA and the drivers side was not too bad, and that you needed to grind down part of a spanner to get the A/C compressor bracket off. I also asked the guy at my local Pep's store where I bought the mounts, who is a mechanic by trade, and he basically told me the same things.

All I can say is that my car must have been built backwards or something, because I did the job this weekend and found the passengers side one relatively simple, the rear bottom A/C comp bolt was a bit tricky to get out with my hand wedged up between the exhaust and the chassis, but doable nonetheless, and the holes lined up pretty easily. The drivers side one on the other hand, was a right PITA...BIG TIME!! It took me 4 hrs to get those dang holes lined up to get those bolts back in!! Ended up with all sorts of makeshift bits and pieces like G-clamps pulling things a bit this way and a bit that way and levering another bit up with a tyre lever while trying to get the bolts in, whilst also adjusting the trolley jack up and down in minute increments at the same time, and of course plenty of the mandatory swearing and cursing!! I even came out with some swear words I didnt even know I knew!!(LOL) I well could have done with about 4 sets of hands to make that job easier. And the other thing contrary to all advice was, that I never found any bolt anywhere, where I had to grind a spanner down to get it out or anything, nothing seemed to close to anything to get a spanner on it.

Anyway the jobs done now and the car rides so much better, and its one job I hope I never have to tackle again!!

Holy smokes batman!!!! I hope mine doesnt break mounts that often! I have had the car for about 4yrs or so and this is the first time I have had to do them, although, they have both been dodgy for about a year or so, just never got around to doing the job, but got rego comin' up so I thought I'd better do 'em. I tell ya what though, I didnt realise how bad they were getting, because they were getting worse slowly I guess, but now its like a new car, all the vibrations and big clunks on acceleration are gone, its as smooth as glass, NICE!!

Yeah I echo sentiments about doing it yourself, nicely done. I know when my mounts were shot (the bolts were pretty much all that was left) it took my friend (a mechanic) a couple of hours to get the seized AC Compressor bolt off, getting about 1/8 of a turn on his spanner for each go, in between a lot of swearing and general frustration.
