look under the bonnit for the tyre placard, this is why you got done. if the placard had 18's on it thay cant touch you (from what ive been told)

Oh and to OP the new law has nothing to do with rim size of what was original. The law now is the the rolling diameter must be within specified guidelines.

I would like to point out I was being sarcastic.
For the benifit of the OP.
I suggest you investigate the rim/ tyre combination that your vehicle came with as standard and also the maximum size rim/ tyre combinaton that was fitted to that particular model by the factory. Pay attention also to the speed and load ratings of the tyres.
Compare this to the roadworthy requirements in your state. You may find that you are allowed to increase the rims width and diameter above the maximum, but the tyres load and speed ratings must be at least the same as original.
If you stay within the regulations you will be fine.
I am not familiar with the laws outside Victoria.
