    Default Rear Main

I have a VS Commodore 5 litre with quite a bad rear main leak, im not the best with cars and would like it done at a mechanics, does anyone know how much this may cost to fix? I know the seal is like 10 - 20 bucks and expecting to pay over 500 to repair, thought I would ask here first.

your looking at either gear box out or engine out. gear box is most common. at least a days labour at your choice of repairer, 8hr x what they charge per hour and parts

Sometimes this job can be cheaper if done by a transmission specialist as they pull transmissions all the time.

a new rope seal is $60 (bothbits) from yr dealer
and its 5-6hrs work (engine and trans can stay in...but sump must come off)
before the special tool is used

    closer to $600 me thinks
