Changed the gasket, thermostat and put all new coolant in my car on the weekend, after the old gasket broke and poured coolant everywhere. Car never overheated as it happend 1min away from home (only got to 1/2 on the temp gauge).
After putting the new thermostat (which says its suitable for a VS commo) and gasket, sealing the gasket with gasket goo, I have coolant coming out of the left bolt on the thermostat housing. But only when the car is turned off after running for approx. 20mins
Today the heat guage reached 3/4 wen sitting in traffic for 5mins. Before changing the thermostat it would only hit 1/2 on the guage. The new thermo stat makes the car run warmer (notch before 1/2) which is better in winter as the previous thermostat which broke when the gasket broke ran the engine at the first notch.
So basically why is coolant coming out of the thermostat housing bolt?
Does this running temp. seem right?
Why is it gettin to 3/4 in traffic (didnt check to see if thermos kicked in as i was in a hurry to turn the car off b4 it got hotter).
It seems that the thermostat gasket is not sealing properly. Did you bleed the cooling system after the repairs? 3/4 on the temp guage is too high, it should be under half way.

I thought I was wrong once but I was mistaken.
Gasket goo, I've never used gasket sealant on a thermostat housing on my Ecotec before. Try not using it.

Try using gasket goo.............
The thermostat gasket is designed to swell once in contact with hot coolant so it shouldn't need sealant (that's the theory anyway)....but some people always put sealant on the bolt threads to prevent coolant creeping up the thread. (also makes it easier to remove next time). Did the thermostat housing have any corrosion? - if bad this can prevent the gasket sealing properly.....also you say the old gasket 'broke' which may indicate that it wasn't sealing properly in the first case...probably because of the corrosion or maybe it is warped. New housings are under $10.

bled the system, no more coolant comin out of the bolt now. sittin in traffic yesterday, temp. sat on the 1/4 line but had the heater on. in normal driving conditions it sits on the 1/4 now, only hit 3/4 the other day in traffic.
