i just bought top gun leads yesterday(8mm sprial wire) put them on car turned on
everything was okay took for a drive, once it geared up it wouldnt come down after i stoped it was still in 2nd and i tried to drive around, it wouldnt gear up either ( i have a auto VR V6 btw)
i put my old champion leads back on and everything was normal car was gearing up and down normally can anyone explain before i go to take them back today ??
thanks in advance
I had to take the silver heat surrounds off the end of the spark leads, i had similar problem car ran like $%^&, took to mechanic removed those shrouds and ran fine after that, he said something about them earthing out not sure how true this can be i not real mechanically minded myself but give it a go, it worked on mine.
silver heat surround ? on the leads ? hmm
i dont see it ive got the red cable and the grey ends that goes onto the coil distributor and spark plug
what exactly are the shrouds if you could try and explain thanks![]()
on the engine side of the leads some have a metal casing around the outside of the connector
im sorry im a little lost, so where the leads connect on the engine side, is that the coil pack your reffering to and the stand thing it sits on ?
All the V6 engines had them originally. Its to stop the exhaust manifold burning or melting the ends of the plug leads where they go onto the spark plug. Some aftermarket sets like bosch come with new heat shields.Or you can just fit the old ones again.
so i wont be able to use the top gun leads ?
is there any chance of showing me in a picture if it isnt too much to ask for
and mine is a VR maybe theres a difference since you have a VS ?
thanks The1
i just pm.d you you box is full.got your chip returned to sender i had 4 as you address not 1 will have to repost it tomorrow for you
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
i see soo in basic terms its my boot touching a metal surface that is causing the trouble ?
Just take the shields off, see if it makes a difference not having them on
I have had the same thing, I just went back and exchanged for a pair without the shields.
the pair i have just have the L shape boots doesnt have a heat shield on it
When they say "on the engine side" they don't mean "on the side of the engine".
- They mean at the end of the lead which connects to the spark plug.
You would be able to tell at a glance if you had the shields on your leads. Sounds like you don't.
thanks for the clear up Alexp36
it doesnt have heat sheilds
im just goin to return them and get sumthing average
I had the heat shields taken off my VS when they put the gas on and when it went for the next service the mechanic couldn't get them off so I had a go and it tore the lead end off, so he pulled the plug out and it had melted to the plug!!!!!!!!!! I'll always use the plug covers now.
hye guys
i had put my old leads back on couple days ago all was fine
and then out of no were today it stoped changing gears just like what happen when i had the top guns on
i found one boot of the lead that goes to the distrubutor coil was loose and didnt click on i tighten the end and then it was normal again
went to work finished started driving home and out of no were again it stoped changning gears
i drove home in 1st gear
can anyone tell me if its a ignition coil related matter or its my auto ?
my auto is a reco and ive only done 15,000ks in it
thanks guys i would really appreciate any help
Have a look at your coil packs and check to make sure that there not damaged in any way. I also had a problem with my VS commodore. It sounded like it was only running on four cylinders and sure enough it was i found a big crack in the coil pack. I had no idea until i took to the mechanics and they pointed it out to me what the prob was, i searched that engine bay and did not see it, have a look at that and let us know.
thanks for that Beno1982
ill have a look around and see if i can see any cracks or so in my coil pack
ill go to my mechanic when i get the chance on tuesday becuase monday is public holiday and let you guys know how it goes
As i said i searched that engine bay for problems, loose wires spark plug leads not connected properly kept going back to coil pack as i figured it was some sort of an ignition problem, the crack blended i still don't know how i missed it, once i got shown it stands out like dogs balls, i now run a MSD coil pack picked up off ebay for 200.
