hey guys
Brought all new shit to refurbish the stato.
Changed everything, NGK leads and Plugs and Bosch Cap and rotor button.
Got it all back together and now it won't fire.
Iv'e got Fuel, Spark and am 99% sure the order is right on the dizzy cap because i copied it off a diagram i found on here. Dizzy cap is seated right, It just won't start!
Iv'e tried moving all the leads around to compensate for the fact i might of read the diagram wrong but it still won't start!
I'm getting a very funny unburnt fuel smell aswell.
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated as i'm stumped and everyone else i know is aswell.
Don't quote me, but I remember reading on here that the online diagram is not always correct because sometimes the distributor is reinstalled in a different position and then the mechanic re-arranges the leads to suit.

sure you remembered to put the rotor in and seated correctly?? ive done this many of times and wondered why things wont start.
You cant just put the number 1 cylinder at top dead centre,it has to be on the firing stroke as well. All you have to do is remove sparkplug number 1, and get someone to wind over the engine by hand,(use a spanner or socket), while you seal your finger over the sparkplug hole, when the piston is on the compression stroke it will force air past your finger, this is the compression stroke for the number 1 cylinder. Then slowly turn it over in the same direction, again by hand, and then stop it on TDC (Top Dead Centre)on the timing marks. If you go past this point, you will have to go around a couple of times again to get to the compression stroke again on that cylinder.Once this has been done, you can set the distributor to fire on the number 1 cylinder. If you try to set it without the number 1 cylinder on the compression stroke,it will be trying to fire on the inlet or exhaust stroke instead.

yeah thanks guys, Where are timing marks?
Thanks, Deneo.
Timing marks are on the harmonic balancer and the timing cover.
Okay guys.
Been out there working on it for a few hours thismorning.
got it to TDC and the rotor button ties in with the diagram that i was following. Anyway reassembled.. Made sure the dizzy cap was seated nice and shit like that.
Tried to start it again, sounded like it wanted to fire about 3 times then went back to turning over with nothing at all.
I'm f'n stumped and frustrated haha. iv'e got 13k's to empty so i'm assuming i have fuel. Anyone else have any ideas?
Thanks, Deneo.
turn the dizzy cap 180 degree's and fire again
Iv'e tried that. still nothing :S
Did you remove the sparkplug and find the compression stroke for number 1 cylinder?
try the old coil pack again.
A mates Calais did this, and it ended up being a dodgy coil. Even just check all the wires are attatch properly.
Yeah i did brett. And soop i didn't change the coil. thanks guys.
Once its set to TDC on the compression stroke of no 1 cylinder, all you have to do is look at which plug lead terminal on the dizzy cap the distributor rotor is pointing to , and put the number 1 plug lead to that terminal. Then follow the firing order of the engine from that one for each plug lead in the direction the dizzy spins...
Iv'e done that..... followed the order off the front of the manifold.. Iv'e pulled leads off and put a plug in them and they are sparking.... I'm stumped.
When my Calais was rebuilt they had problems getting it to fire. Turned out to be a faulty rotor button.

yeah it is! All sorted, went out one morning rolled it down the driveway, tried to start it and bang. I'm assuming i was hell low on fuel.
Thanks for al lthe replies guys!
