Default VR brakes lights wont work.

    hi all,

my 94 VR series 2 brake lights wont work. i have checked the fuse and the globes and there all fine. i bought a multimeter and put it to the fuse box and it reads 0.0 were as other fuses read 14ish, i dunno if i'm doing it right or not. when i turn the lights on, the tail lights work but when i press the brake peddle none of the brake lights work. the reverse lights also dont work.

any help or ideas as to why this would be happening would be great as i don't know much about cars, still learning.

    thanks guys

Check the brake pedal switch at the top of the brake pedal.A wire might have come off at the switch,or the switch itself might just need adjusting.

    Welcome to the forum!
I'm not sure as I cannot check my own car, but I have a feeling you have to have the ignition on for the brake and reverse lights to work. Good Luck.

The brake lights are meant to work even with the ignition switch off.I just went out and double checked on my VS and they work with no key in the ignition.

As mentioned, i'd be checking your stop light switch. It has a small spring loaded button that moves in and out as you depress the brake pedal. From memory it is white and is located to the left of the fuse rail, directly in front of the pedal and has a black electrical plug with two wires attached to it. Check this plug is correctly attached. If all is ok, it may need adjusting which can be done by unclipping the electrical plug and winding the switch in or out. If still no success you may need a new switch which will be a cheap replacement either new or second hand.

The OP advises the fuse is reading 0.0 Volts (both sides I would presume), so you'd imagine that no power is getting to the fuse....so no power to the fuse means no power anywhere on that circuit......unless the OP is reading the wrong side of the fuse which could mean the fuse is blown.

Looking at a wiring diagram in a workshop manual, fuse number 8 under the dash feeds the brake light circuit and also goes to the BCM.It is an orange/blue wire. The power feed to fuse number 8 also feeds fuse numbers 1,2,3,4,5,6,7 , these fuses are all fed straight from the battery via the 60A main fusible link.

if fuses 1,2,3,4,5,6,7, are all working than a broken wire to the brake light fuse is a must, that is of corse the reading on the brake fuse was 0.0 on both sides. i would replace the fuse anyway. it could be damaged and causig no voltage. check for power at the fuse blade holder its self not the fuse.

Double check that you are actually checking fuse 8 - there are some empty fuse slots on the board and it's easy to get them mixed up. Also, how exactly did you check for volts at the fusebox? - like did you insert the probe or use a fuse and probe the front bit?
