    Thumbs down my car is making a grinding noise

    my car is making a grinding noise and i dont know what it is and im scared to drive it, sounds like its coming from the back and makes most noise in 1st gear. help its a 97 vs acclaim

    Diff on its way out.
    Brake pads worn down to metal.
    Car to low and tail shaft rubbing on the floor pan.

    Welcome to the forum. As in the above post, it could be a lot of things. I'd suggest you jack the rear up and the car in neutral and try to turn the wheel....see if it makes a noise. If you do this make sure you put bricks or similar in front of and behind the front wheels to stop it moving and do not get under the car whilst up on the jack. Another method is to drive the car to where yopu can have one side on the footpath and the other on the road - then you get better clearance to do an inspection - but to track it down, you are going to have to look.
    It may be something as simple as a pebble stuck in the rear brake. Good Luck.

    Grinding from the rear could be brake pads. It could also be the handbrake shoes inside the rear rotor.
