okay guys. 1997 vs 2 berlina fill the tank up to the brim. after 44 litres the gauge shows empty and the distantce to empty is fairly low...it has a tow pack but weather that makes a difference to tank size or not? and how could i go about the car to tell me its low on fuel when it really is?
It's possibly the sender unit inside the tank. They have a variable resistor that has a sliding contact operated by a float. The contact wears in one area and the gauge reads low when the fuel level gets to the point where the resistor is worn. Easiest way to check is to measure the resistance across the two sensor wires from under the car - infinite resistance/open circuit = dead sender. To check the gauge end, use a variable resistance across the car end and watch the gauge - not sure of what resistance should be for acorresponding gauge reading. =>Shop manual.
My VS series 2 Exec shows the low fuel warning after I've used about 46 litres.....6 years ago the low fuel warning would not happen till I'd used 52 litres so this problem has got worse over the years and the reason it's happening is probably as Cheap6 outlines above. If you replace the sender you may end up with one just as bad from a wrecker and I'd imagine new they would cost quite a bit but I could be wrong.. It doesn't worry me as I'm used to it.
Your fuel tank will hold 59 litres unless it has the long distance tank which holds 73 litres....maybe if it has the genuine factory towpack (not just a towbar) it has the larger tank.

For future reference:
276-290 ohms - empty
94-100 ohms - half
38-42 - full
Avoid shorting the across the wires to the gauge i.e. 0 ohms when testing.
