Yippy, finally got this ute on the roadthe only problem with it so far, is the gearbox, it changes up through the gears fine, but for some reason it wont go back into 3rd from changing down from 4th?
There are no wines or anything all seems ok just cant select 3rd on the down change
Any ideas?
Cheers.
blown synchro on 3rd gear is my best bet.
it requires the gearbox to be pulled apart and the appropriate broken parts replaced.
Don't think it would be the synchro as you say it's OK changing up....has to be in the selector rail/linkages. When you try for 3rd, is it just solid...no crunching...as though it's not there......have you tried double-de-clutching?

Synchro as above. Mine did the same thing, rebuilt with new synchros and it's sweet now. Strangely enough it chewed out the slots on the back of the synchro so that when it turned in one direction (downshift), it simply refused to engage at all - couldn't push it in at all, no crunching because the synchro was actually blocking engagement with the dogs.
Wow I hope its not that, but it is doing like you have explained, will check out the rails/linkages first and fingers crossed thats all it is! if it turnes out it is the syncro,
is it much of a job to fix, and costly? or would it be easier and cheeper to buy another box?
Thanks for the reply and info.
ah well just dont go from 4th to 3rd just skip down to 2nd problem solved :P lol
Try going 4th to 2nd quickly then go back into 3rd. (Might even work without letting clutch out a little in 2nd).
The parts don't cost a lot (got a complete kit from the US for less than NZ$250 including shipping), depends on how much you can do yourself. It can't really be anything but the synchro if it goes into all gears fine except for down into third (but still OK up into third). You may possibly find you can drop it into second without releasing the clutch then it will go into third because this re-aligns the synchros - its not the synchro dog teeth that are the problem but the misalignment caused by the wear in the notches on the back of the synchro.
If that is indeed the issue then you're not going to hurt anything by driving it as-is, its only an annoyance.
have you tryed adjusting ur cable?
