Hi Everyone
First Time Poster so please be kind.
I have a 1997 Holden Commodore VS Acclaim, and most recently it has started making some really bad noises.
I have noticed that there is a whistling noise occassionally coming through what appears to be the front drivers side wheel area, this stops when I put my foot on the break, sometimes I dont hear it, but other times it will start up again.
Today, I was driving and heard 2 backfires and the car is now jumping, I checked all the oils etc and everything seemed fine but I did notice some transmission fluid leaking around the radiator area, I have been topping it with transmission fluid but seems to have a leak, I have tried looking for where the leak actually is but can not find it anywhere.
I would oboviously like to get this fixed and would love some general ideas, as it is my only car and can not afford a massive repair bill and can not get another car due to issues.
its the transmission cooler lines usually the bottom one
I cant see how the transmission cooler lines would cause a whistling noise, or cause backfiring. If the transmission cooler lines near the radiator are leaking transmission fluid, then tighten or replace the rubber lines.Id check for any set error codes first up.Heres a link to a thread that shows you how to do this test. Its a simple test, easy to do,and very handy when trying to diagnose problems with these cars. ---Checking error codes VR/VS (Revised)---
The whistling sound is possibly coming from the brake vacuum booster which runs on vacuum which is reduced slightly when you apply the brakes....check the large hose that attaches to the booster. If there is a major vacuum leak here, it may also cause backfiring by allowing air into the engine and upsetting the mixture.
Re the oil leak - degrease the area with a $2 can of degreaser then start the engine and see exactly where it is leaking from.
