Default opinions on using an engine oil flush

well done most of the major service today, just got to change the oil and filter tommorow,

what is peoples opinion on using a bottle of engine oil flush before i drop the old oil?

engine is approx on 220000km, still running pretty good

rear main has a leak though.

would it be good to put a bottle in, to clean it up a little, and pickup?

or would you's not recommend it, would it create more leaks, etc?

    cheers in advance

Use an oil flush ... it cleans the sludge in the engine and from the pickup ... if the engine is really sludgy it won't clean it all but it will help.
I always use it when servicing as it keeps the engine clean as well ... I change my oil every 2500km - 3000km.
It won't create more oil leaks ... besides its a commodore they all leak!

If the sludge is holding up in a spot where its stoping a leak and you clean it away whats going to hapen

    Its a double edged sword

At that mileage I wouldn't use it either - the rear seal will leak worse and it will have to be fixed which means engine or transmission removal = $$$$.

i just use a good quality diesel engine oil been running one in mine since Feb when i bought the car. diesel oil has more detergents in it so it cleans it. might want to get one that's a similar grade to the oil you are using, or 20w 50 might be an alternative to a wearing engine.

how bad is you rear main oil leak, ive seen some relay bad ones at times where it covers the exhaust, if this was the case i would repair it NOW as it could be fatal.

as with the oil flush, as far as im concerned would be a waist unless you beleve it works, but nothing beats reguler servicing. 2500 3000 is way too soon in my own opinion, i do mine every 3-6 mths depending what ive done in the car ie long trip etc. or 5000km i am running 15w30 valvoline diesel extra at the moment in my vr v6.

Plus oil on the road is extremely dangerous especially when the road is wet.

Regular servicing is the key to clean internals...

The heads of my l67-320thousand ks are spotless, running synthetic oil changed every 10thou

New heads came off a motor with apprx 150thousand ks, covered in sludge and carbon cr*p

I've heard of people throwing a litre of deisel or so in with the oil before a flush works well. I've seen how deisel eats away at sludge. Don't know if i'd try it though. Was a big post on oldholden.com at one stage. Most of them reckon it works better than these flush treatments you can buy.

What about when the diesel oil cleans away the carbon build up so the now the motor starts losing compression ?

I know a guy whose missus topped up the oil with diesel oil by mistake in their VSV6 and it lasted about half an hour before it seized up the main bearings.I wouldnt like to try it.

The old boy used to drop some oil and then top it up with diesel. Run the motor lightly and get it all warmed up. Then he'd drop all the oil and poor a little clean oil through. Then put the plug back in and fill the oil as it should with a new filter. Would keep the cars Mickey mouse and did for a great many years Falcon and Civic. They were old school motors. Then he tried it on his new second hand Honda Prelude. Only thing was previous owners had used many oil additives. These dissolved a bit, clogged the oil pick up and cooked the motor, the pick up was loaded with very thin silicon like bits
If the motor is unknown I would be careful, diesel oil off course being different to diesel itself and a much "safer" option.

Get a filter magnet too. Handy things those
