hey guy about to do a full service on my vr and i was wondering what oil do you guys recommand. i use to run magnatec in my vs and it was a brillant oil but thought id see what you guys found to be the best car has 180thou on it
I have been running Mobil1 in the wifes VR Calais 5.0L since we got it at 127,000km's. It has now done 287,000km's & I've never had the heads off.
It also still does not blow smoke.
In my VS Calais 5.0L I currently run Penrite HPR 40. This is due to the engine being 16,000km's old. When it reaches 40-50,000km's I'll be swaping that to Mobil1 or Penrite Synthetic.
as for filter you can't go past Ryco or K&N.
A lot of it comes down to preferance, if you use a quality oil you will have quality results.
I hope that helps, however i've probably stirred up a hornets nest!

20w 50 will be fine, when i buy bottle oil i get castrol but im a cheep ass these days get get my oil from work. im running 15w40 valvoline diesel extra at them monent to clean it out a bit, but if you dont have sludge issues than a good magnitec or gtx2 or 3 will do. its up to you if you want to run a 15w30 or a 20w 50. nurlon make a good oil too. try looking at some diffrent web sites and see what the oil offers.

I just find synthetic makes the engine run smoother and seems to reduce fuel use. Also cold starts on a -6deg day are flawless, where as with mineral it chugs and farts and rattles the rockers.
The main thing is to change your oil often, every 5000km's for me, that way it's always pretty clean and can do it's job, people can go on about oil viscosities and brands all day long, but as long as you stay close to the manufacturer specs and keep it clean it will do it's job.
My dad uses the cheap oil from woolies or kmart, he has 350,000km on his pulsar but he changes it every 3 - 4000km.
As above Castrol GTX2 20w 50 will do the job cheaply but good, Mobil makes the base stock oils for all the companies in the world, there used in alot of heavy industry eg CAT so that's why i pick them for my car. Plus i get discounts.
Purolator is the best oil filter imo as they invented the oil filter. I always use valvoline which always does the job nicely. If you want to know if oil's any good do a friction test. get some engine oil and rub it between your fore-finger and your thumb. If it heats up then it's not gonna be good for your engine. Shell helix tends to do this so I'd stay well away from it!
well my vs with 180thou on it i used magnatc and i got 6000kims outta it befoer it had a tinge of black threw it,, but everyones swaering on synthic oil so might have a look what a castrol edge or something like that?
I would just stick with a 20w 50 mate, something like a gtx2 or nulon would be fine, i personally wouldnt bother paying the extra for fully synthetic if its not a high performance and a car that cops abuse, this is all my opinion and yes some people may disagree with me
thats very true i want to do sume roller rockers and bigger valve springs maybe a cam a bit later but if the bottom end gone full rebuild and a turbo kit it is lol
whatever you choose you should stick with 1 oil unless you are not happy with it then find something else and stick with that. Going from mineral to synthetic then back to mineral is not a good idea.
Well unless you plan on doing all that before your next oil change then stick with the 20w 50![]()
