    Default oil pressure gauge

Hey just bought some gauges for when my charger goes on installed them yesterday and having some trouble with my electronic oil pressure gauge i installed the t peice fitted everything up wired it up as per the instructions but when i turn the car on the needle just goes through the roof and maxes out over the 100psi i think it is, any suggestions why this is happening ? cheers

Without seeing the wiring digram for the gauge, i can only guess, there is an earth wire, and a signal wire going from the sender to the gauge, (as well as power and lighting wire/s)

The gauge itself is nothing but an ohmmeter, made to measure resistance of the sender.

A typical analog ohmmeter will have the needle fly to FULL SCALE DEFLECTION (in your case, 100 or more psi) when the earth wire touches the signal wire (Meaning ZERO resistance)

    Check 1:
You havent wired the signal and earth wires backwards?

    Check 2:
Perhaps you have a short somewhere on the signal wire? Or a faulty pressure sender unit.
    - To check the sender unit, measure its resistance with an mulitmeter, it should read something but NOT read ZERO .

    Check 3:
take the signal wire off the sendor, and start the car (or a safer option is to put the ignition to ON but dont crank it) then, the gauge should NOT move. If this is the case. then refer "check 2"

if it still dont work... let us know.

Have you put the right oil pressure switch in it as the one for running the dash light will not work.
they usually go straight to max when the wrong type of switch is in there.

thanks for the input guys i tried re wiring it again today and still a no go, what it has is 5 wires from the gauge and 2 wores on the sender itself,

    gauge wires are

    red- 12v ignition
    white- 12v ignition
    green- sender wire
    black- ground
    orange- 12v dash lighting

    sender unit
    terminal 1- sender wire
    terminal 2-ground

what i have done is since i dont want the gauge to turn on with the dash lights i ran the red white off the same source which is a 12v ignition source which runs through a switch and the orange off the battery i installed to control my airbag gauge light so i can turn the backlights on when i want to , i re ran a wire for the ground and sender unit today to clarify there is no shorts in my wires to the sender unit also tried changing the wires around to make sure it was not wired wrong from the factory, the only thing i can think of is a faulty sender unit , also checked that the unit was getting oil and the small hole going into the unit wasn't blocked, i will the test sender unit tommorow with my meter and see what i get

ok well tested everything today turns out

white 12v ignition source- is the power for the backlight
red 12v ignition source- is the power for the needle
orange 12v dash light- got nfi gave it power took it off and nothing happened at all
    green goes to the sender

connected up a set of wires today on the sender put my meter on (digital) no resistance across it turned engine on and still showed no resistance. me thinks its rooted?

also when you turn the car on the needle goes above the max 140psi and just sits there im thinking the sender converts oil pressure into a resistance and causes a resistance between the power source for the needle and the gauge and should hopefully tell you pretty accurately what your oil pressure is is this correct if so im off to supercheap to get the sender replaced

    cheers
