vr ss 5 litre, put motor back in everything is wired in.
1. spark from coil
2. spark at plugs
3. fuel on plugs
I have that, i put a new timing chain in and the timing is on the 2nd notch of Advanced.
Checked all the fuses and relays.
From memory there are 4 earths? 1 ontop of the alternator where the cruise control bracket sits, one on the water pump, 1 on the engine mount bracket at the back of the motor, and one big one sitting on the power steering.
Starter motor is wired up with the 2 wires, alternator has the correct plug and wire.
Thats what i've tried and taken a look at, the problem is the motor will only sit there and try to crank it wont fire, what could i be looking for?
Im really out of ideas guys.. lol it's goto be something stupid (hopefully for my sake haha)
Are you 100% sure the distributer and leads are all back in their correct position...like have you checked that plug number 1 fires when piston number one is at top dead centre with both valves closed.

if you have advanced valve timing then you have to remove dizzy and refit in correct position.
First job tomorrow, how do i do this?
Also forgot to add it started to smoke near the negative battery terminal.
check your fusable links under the fuse/relay holder in the engine bay.
Yeah switched all the relays around and still nothing, Did not check the fuses that are below them tho, they could be a problem?
those ones below them are the fusable links.
You say: "tries to crank" - does this mean it it sluggish when cranking - if so the battery may be flat
ditto: "started to smoke near the negative battery terminal" - may mean terminal is dirty and not making good contact or you've been cranking for too long and heating things up.
ditto: "1. spark from coil
2. spark at plugs" - this would indicate you have ignition which should mean fusible links are OK.
I'd still be looking at the dissy in the wrong position.

Try this link - it will give you an idea of what you need to do to check. Basically you need to ensure that the rotor cap is pointing to No 1 cylinder when that cylinder is at TDC on a compression stroke. If not, the car will never start.

Is there any indication it wants to fire?
Like a backfire or as short rise in the cranking speed.
I'm a bit confused by your comment "I lined the timing chain on TDC # 4".
Did you check the cam timing with a degree wheel?
If I told you I was a compulsive liar, would you believe me?
G'day i think you may have got confused with the timing most cam and ign timing is done on #1. You say that you adv cam timing 2 notches ?? am i correct in thinking you mean 2 teeth on the sprocket? if this is so then cam timing will be way out
Jon
This is how the timing chain goes with the number 1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke.

Some aftermarket timming chain sets have 9 key ways instead of just 1.
if you move it round 2 key ways for example 4deg advance you line up the number on that key way with the bright link.
Doing this means the engine will be at TDC but the cam will be advanced 4deg for more performance, it is still timmed right.
I hope that helps.![]()
I went off the first one, because the bloke from jp performance said that his diagram is wrong and has been for 15 yrs apparently, but i still couldnt work that out, the first picture was out of a manual.
The keyway does not align with the camshaft if you try to go off TDDC #1
