I have a issue strating my VS SS. When it is cold it will start no issue, but if i stop after a short drive, it will not start again. It will just turn over and not start. It starts to smell like it is getting too much fuel. If it kicks over it will just stall straight away. I have to wait a fair amount of time then it will finally start and blow a bit of black smoke.
Any advice of fixing this as it is really annoying.
It sounds like its loosing spark when it gets hot.The black smoke that comes out once it starts is excess fuel being burnt off.It could be the hall effect sensor in the distributor,or the ignition coil ,or maybe the ignition module.Theres been a few people on here lately that have been having trouble with the hall sensor in the dizzy ,the ignition coil, or the ignition module packing it in on the 5.0 litre engines.Try to borrow the above mentoned items from a mate etc, and try them one at a time to see how it goes.
Hi,
If it starts in the morning then it's not the coil, it will be an injector that is not fully closing off, causing fuel to dribble into one or more piston chambers, the best way to check this is to remove the fuel pump fuse
1. Take the vehicle for a trip, 10 minutes should be enough.
2. Park the car leave for 20 minutes
3. Pop your bonnett
4. Remove the fuel pump fuse.
5. Attempt to start vehicle - If it cranks over quickly then excess fuel is your problem.
but on VR/VS I have a feeling that it also kills the ignition. So another option is get a pair of locking-pliers that is used to tie off brake lines, and lock off the fuel line, replace this for step 4.
hope this helps.

Ive seen temperature cause problems with coils before. They are ok when cold, but then have a weak spark, or even no spark at all once they get hot.And if it was a leaking injector it would happen when the engine is cold,as the fuel leaks into the cylinder and builds up when the engine is not running. My mates injector was leaking overnight and was misfiring when first started the next morning.. Also a leaking injector usually only effects one cylinder, the cylinder that has the fuel leaking into it,which will just cause it to misfire on startup. It wont stop the whole engine from starting.

Most likely cause is the starter motor (too much resistance when hot), the +ve cable from the battery, or a bad earth. Check if the car starts when you use a set of jumper leads to another battery/car.
If the starter motor winds the engine over once the engine is hot, then the starter wont be the cause of it not firing up.The post says it turns over but wont start. If its winding over, but very slowly, then it probably is an earthing problem or bad electrical connection somewhere.
yes leaking injectors are one per cylinder, it will start easier in the morning as the fuel evaporates over night. if he does my check that will rule out if it's fuel injector(s) or not. Yes it can be coil or lack of spark that can act the same. I aggree it's not starter motor as it was stated it cranks , then fires up then stalls, so sounds like too much fuel.

You would have to be very unlucky to have 2 or more injectors start leaking at the same time.Ive never seen it happen. Thats like getting 2 flat tyres at the same time. Its usually only the 1 that starts leaking. The fuel system stays pressurised long after the engine is switched off,and a leaking injector will continue to leak fuel into the cylinder until the fuel system residual pressure is relieved,so the fuel doesnt get a chance to evaporate from the cylinder. Most leaky injectors I have seen have caused problems when first starting after sitting for a few hours (usually overnight).Rich black smoke from the exhaust, and the engine missing on a cylinder(which will start to fire once its dried out after a few seconds of running) are both classic signs of a leaking injector. Also once the engine has first been started for the day, the problem usually goes away until the vehicle has been sitting again for a while, and the fuel builds up in the cylinder again.

I think we can close this thread, as the original person posting this thread doesn't seem to have come back, so perhaps he's sorted it already.
