hey all i have a vx ecotec in a vr with a t5 and the flywheel has come loose twice now i have used new genuine bolts both times and torqued them up properly the engine is worked, because the motor was auto i was wondering if they had a dowel pin in manuals? or what can i do to prevent this from happening again my car is currently in peices open to ideas, thanks
well put new bolts in again and ***ed again this time im putting a lightened flywheel and 2 5mm dowel pins in and if this fails the peice of sh!t is going to scrap and going to buy a ef xr6
use red locktite as it will not soften with heat as much.
+1 for loctite
out of interest the t5 and it's flywheel, did they come from the VX? the engine used in the VR known as the buick is different from the ecotec in regards to balancing, you will find that the VR and lower model flywheels have a large counter balance cast into them whereas a flywheel for an ecotec engine will not as they are balanced internally (From memory) do a search for manual flywheel, etc, etc within the VR/VS section and you will see what I mean.
yeah ive used loctite new bolts already have blue loctite on them already but i put more on, the gearbox and flywheel where out of an earlier car like vn or vr but there is some 3/4 inch holes drilled in the flywheel so i beleive its balanced, ive never seen them in a vr flywheel before and the whole setup was in a vn setup for a track car it was dynoed at 240rwkw and ive put this in my vr and it gets traction and wants to go where the vn spun the wheels effortlessly so there is more strain on the flywheel bolts, i beleive factory manual ecotecs had guide pins where autos dont so thats where my problem lies flywheel bolts arnt meant to take any twist
I dare say its unbalanced, if it came from a VN and was setup in a VN then it is balanced for the older style engine, take it to a machine shop and have it balanced, thats my advice, a good engine rebuilder or the like should be able to do it.
the car was built by hp heaven im positive it is ballanced but there should dowels to locate the flywheel the engine has no vibrations when in gear or neutral flywheels bolts shouldnt have any force on them when all 8 bolts are in just nipped up the flywheel still turns to the left and right 3 or 4 milimeters, therefore when to much tourque is applied the flywheels turns in cause the bolts crack there seating and come loose if there were dowels it wouldnt shift and this wouldnt happen, im hunting down a lightened flywheel and hd cussion clutch and getting the pressure plate zero balanced and putting dowels in. but i know there is a difference with vs t5 flywheel and buick ones
whats the difference in the vs t5 flywheels and the vr t5 flywheels i want to put the t5 out of my vr onto a ecotec and wanna use the vr t5 flywheel.. is that possible at all??
ecotech flywheel stud pattern is different, try some good old enamel paint on your flywheel bolts, tighten, then let it sit for a couple of days to dry then try it. it usually works better than loctite. or even try bolts a little longer than the ones your getting supplied as that was a problem i had with a torana back in the 80's
torque the bolts then tack weld the heads in two places to the flywheel .
