hey guys,im replacing the inlet manifold gasket in my vr on the weekend,is it that hard to do.is there anything i should look out for?ive never done it before so any help would be appreciated.and also when i buy the gasket is it just the one gasket or is it in a set.and is there anything else i need to replace at the same time.
Get a workshop manual.Especially if you have never done any work like this before. If you cant get hold of a factory manual, get a gregorys brand one. These manuals have heaps of stuff in them, including how to change the inlet manifold gasket(s),and its all step by step instructions, with plenty of pictures, you cant go wrong. These manuals also show the tightening sequence of the inlet manifold, and also lists the bolt tightening tensions which must be followed when tightening certain bolts, usually on the engine or suspension. If the tightening sequence of the bolts is not followed,or if the bolts are tightened up too loose or too tight,it can cause the inlet manifold to warp and/or cause the manifold gasket to blow out again prematurely,so it should be followed. You can learn a lot,and you can save a small fortune servicing or repairing your car yourself using these manuals.Well worth it,and you also know the job has been done properly.
ok thanks, were can i get one without having to wait for delievery?and does it cost alot?
Supercheap have them on special in their latest catalogue 20% off so they are now $34.39
Some extra tips:
Clean means clean - use paint thinners (not Prepsol or turpentine) and clean cloths to get the surfaces, particularly in the corners between the heads and block, clean.
The heads will likely have some corrosion around the coolant passages. Fill that with a very thin smear of silicone sealant wiped across with a razor blade just before fitting the gaskets.
You will need GM head stud sealer for the bolts that go through into the coolant passages.
Clean out the blind bolt holes.
Clean the bolt threads to ensure the torque used to turn the bolts actually tightens the bolts.
does anybody know the tightening sequence for the manifold and head gasket on a vr
