Hey Guys,
I live in Canberra and for those who have been here during winter, its not the most idealistic temperature.
I recently flushed my coolant (if you could call the old stuff that, brown sludge), as my car was always running very hot. Also replaced the thermostat etc.. Now my car is running cold and rarely gets over 1/4 on the temp gauge, and as the engine is cold, the heater is not blowing hot air.
I recently replaced the heater tap around the same time as doing the coolant as it was leaking like hell, and yeah, no difference.
Any help appreciated.
It could be that the new thermostat is faulty and has stuck open.Which wont let the engine get up to operating temperature. Was the replacement thermostat the standard heat range. It could also be a colder range thermostat.
Double check you put the hoses back correctly on the heater tap. I'd also check that the 2 brass pipes under the steering wheel and to the left near your left ankle are getting hot - if not this means coolant is not flowing through the heater. Have you checked that previous owner has not blocked the heater hoses to "fix" a leaking heater? With the gauge on 1/4 the coolant temp will still be very hot....like over 95C.

Cheers Guys I might check both of these.. If someone would be able to get a pic of their heater tap it would be great so I could check. Cheers
Sounds like the heater tap is not opening. If it was working before replacing this and now not working, then its a fair guess. The heater tap is vacume operated, and you should be able to operate it with your mouth by blowing/sucking hard into the vacume ports. If it checks out then re-install it and check theres vacume on the lines and they are not leaking.
Theres a small possibility that the core is fully clogged because of the crap that may have gotten flushed through it. I have never had to back flush a heater core, Im not sure how to backflush a heater core but i could imagine it being a little bit of a pain.
