Exclamation vr commdore ute one tonner conversion help.

hi everyone, I have a VR Commodore ute which has style sides like they all do. I was thinking of converting the style sides and replacing with a Flat Alloy Tray. I have a mate thats a sheet metal worker and panel beater so doing it wont be a problem.

I just need to know laws and regulations regarding this sort of thing in QLD. Do i need a Modification Plate for this sort of work...and if i do does that mean they will want chassis to be strengthened or someting like that.

    Any help would be appreciated.

    cheers

In NSW it would need a Engineers certificate as the tub gives the chassis strength.

If you end up doing it let me know as I am thinking of doing the same thing.

    Cheers Nick

There are places that actually do this, bloke at work has one but in NSW. Yes the chasis needs strengthening, cause the easiest way to do this mod properly is to simply cut the car in half and weld a new back end on

Should be a bit different but why don't you use a later model if it's going to cost a fair bit anyway?

I used to work at a place in Newcastle that did these conversions "The New One Tonner Company" in their prime they were producing about 8 utes a month, vn to vs at the time. From first hand experience it's a lot of work, I think it was around the 10 grand mark these guys were charging drive in drive out conversion. Then they just started their own car yard. Glad to help with any tips though.
