An hr after leaving home the other day i noticed an electrical burning smell coming from under the bonnet and the speed-o and the rpm dial went crazy ...then started bunny hopping and the engine light came on and immediatly stalled...i restarted it straight away to get off the road but the battery light stayed on too..then the battery went totaly flat overnight..smells like the burning smell is either coming from the alternator or the things the sparks plug leads connect to..
i had the starter motor replaced about 2 weeks ago and only driven it 3 times before this happened ..could the new starter motor have something to do with it..or did they stuff something when installing it?
any ideas what it could be?
thanks
Whatever is burnt out will now be very apparent by smell. Stick your nose on the Alt and sniff inside. If it takes your breath away then thats it. If its just a mild general electical smell you would expect move on. Have a look under the fuse box in the engine bay, or better yet just take the covr off and sniff.

same thing happened to my vr a few wks ago. turned out to be thew earth cable from the battery. if the rubber looks corroded or melted i'd say thats it
